Installed the MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X 8G this week, replacing my trusty ASUS GTX 760 DirectCU II OC, which had it's stock cooler replaced with an MK-26 and 2x120mm fans.
The old and the new. GTX 760 with stock cooler. The 760 has a TDP of >170W, while the 1070 runs on 150W (stock). It's interesting to compare the size of the coolers with these numbers in mind.
Two shots with the GTX760 + MK-26 + 2x120mm fans
Make no mistake: the MK-26 is massive, the whole combination using up 3 1/2 slots. It can handle up to 320W TDP.
So how does it look inside the case?
(just kidding)
Performance and noise:
When gaming, the 760 produces a howling, jet-engine like sound, which is not so bad inside an R5, but was clearly too much for me, when my rig was still inside the Solo2 (thus the MK-26). The 1070 disappears in the general (very gentle) fan whoosh of the case fans.
General power consumption while gaming has dropped significantly to 130-150W, the efficiency of the new architecture shows clearly.
For the moment I do not plan to replace the stock cooler with the MK-26. I went for the MSI card, because it's a plain 2-slot design. By the end of the year I will try to stuff the whole setup into a very small case and see what happens, so I will need a slim card.
Bye bye GTX 760 - Hello MSI GTX 1070!
