Radeon Pro Duo fan replacement

Post by speedy » Wed Apr 05, 2017 12:43 pm

AMD Radeon Pro Duo has an external water-cooling radiator with 12" stock fan which seems to be running on relatively low RPM while in desktop mode. And at such low RPM, it's annoyingly loud. Did anyone try to replace it with a silent fan and has any experiences to share?

Looks like an 80 to 92 mm fan. 12" would be ~300mm..

So, I went ahead and changed the fan. The stock fan on Radeon Pro Duo is Nidec Servo D1225C12B7ZP-70 with non-standard wiring colors -

1. Black - Ground
2. Red - 12V
3. Yellow - RPM sensor
4. Blue - PWM line

After changing the fan to Arctic Cooling F12 PWM PST, the card is way way quieter. Unfortunately, now that it got quieter, it turned out it has coil whine when 3D graphics is displayed at very high FPS. With ~70-90 FPS, it's not that bad. There is some pump noise present as well. I guess a good workaround for that is to limit the FPS to VSync. The strange thing is that this reviewer:

said "Even better – there is NO noticeable pump noise or coil whine from the card!". Maybe they didn't hear the coil whine from the bad / rumbling stock fan? ;)
