What's the difference between these cards?

They make noise, too.

What's the difference between these cards?

Post by whispercat » Thu May 24, 2018 12:39 pm

Could someone please explain the difference between these cards to me?

I'm looking at the MSI GeForce GTX 1060 DirectX 12. Newegg has about 6, the top 3 seem identical except for color, all at different price points. Newegg (and Amazon) always do this. It's confusing.

MSI and all the others create a bunch on different model numbers based on the same silicon. Some use the same board layout and cooling solution (like the ones with the Gaming non de plume) but differ in how they set the OC level when shipped to you. Suggestion is to just get the Gaming X version and call it a day :)
1080p Gaming build: i5-4670K, Mugen 4, Asrock Z97 Anniversary, MSI GTX 1660 Gaming X, 8GB 1866 RAM, Samsung 860 Evo 500GB, Crucial MX100 256GB, WD Red 2TB, Samsung DVD burner, Fractal Define R4, Antec True Quiet 140 (2 front + rear) case fans, Seasonic SSR-550FX. 35W idle, 45-55W video streaming, 170-200W WoW, 318W stress test (Prime95 + Furmark)

Anything different about the 'X' model? And why are the two X models wildly different prices?

What is the 'armor' version? Why do some cards only have one fan? Are these any quieter?

Would all of these slightly different versions all have the same cooling and/or quietness characteristics?

The Armor is basically a lower cost version of the Gaming X. It uses the same circuit board, and GPU speed, boost etc aside the main difference is the cooler. The Gaming X uses a version of MSI's renowned TwinFrozr cooler. The Armor uses a simplified cooler, one less heat pipe for example. There is a backplate on the Gaming X, there isn't one on the Armor. It's all about card manufacturers having models with the same graphics chip at different price points for marketing reasons.
