looks to be a nice quiet barebone, but not sure if it is sufficient to be a media center or not

I built one of these out for my firewall/VPN because of the C7 chip. As a general purpose CPU the C7 is no great shakes. But as a VPN or encryption engine a properly configured C7 will blow the doors off of any x86 line general purpose CPU (including 64bit, X2, Core2, server versions, etc.) on encryption. For more information take a look at the Padlock security engine info on Via's website.
With the Axis700 all I had to do was drop in an extra NIC and a USB flash key for storage and I had a fully functional, fast booting, nearly silent firewall/VPN system waiting for a linux install.
