Which barb for 7/16" tubing?

Post by Day » Fri Sep 29, 2006 10:52 am

I'm getting Tygon 7/16" (11.1mm) ID and 5/8" (15.9mm) OD tubing. I also need some barbs and people recommend the 1/2" barbs. But looking at the european websites that sell the barbs they operate in milimeters and that confuses me a bit. I've spotted 2 types of barbs, which one do I need?

My understanding is that when in doubt, take the bigger barb. You might need to warm the tube to get it over the barb, but once it's there, it makes a very tight seal. For what I know, tygon is fairly flexible, so there should be no real problems in strecthing it over the 12mm barb. 0.9mm (or 8%) is really not such big deal for an elastic material to stretch.

Naturally if you use clamps or pressure fittings, you might get the job done with the 10mm barbs, but there is always a risk that the tube will not squeeze down properly and will form some miniscular folds, which are bad for water-tightness.

And by the way, check this guys shop: http://ekwaterblocks.com/shop/index.php. People have praised quality of his work and he ships imperial-sized barbs from Europe.
