I'm doing just fine with a fanmated NV5, but I'd recommend the VF700. It's less likely to conflict with a passive northbridge cooler like the Zalman NB-47J and it's reported to be much quieter at stock speeds (the NV5 is pretty noisy at stock - nothing like stock graphics card coolers, but it was comparable to my chipset fan).
By the time the NV5 is fanmated and near silent, it's not exhausting much out of the case, and you're better off turning your main exhaust fan up a little to compensate for a non-exhausting but quieter cooler. The fanmated NV5 isn't a bad solution, but the VF700 is simply easier to work with/around.

I've got a VF700 mounted on a MSI 6600GT AGP card running at 5V (Zalman supplies a small adapter cable to run it at either 5V or 12V )Seems to work nicely for the moment, and very quietly. I have yet to stress-test it under heavy load though.

I changed my NV5 on my 6800GT. It was fairly quiet but didn't cool that well. The VF700 cools ~10°C more and sounds equal or less. I think the NV5 may have some troubles in cooling the memory and the GPU both.
I may change back someday to re-evaluate. :)

peterson, did your case/CPU temperatures change either way with the swap?

Agree. This was a problem with the original VGA silencer when on "low" speed as well. I had to switch it to "high" for it to be truly effective at blowing the heat out of the case, at least on a 9800 pro under gaming load (~50w).

Otherwise it ends up being a heat radiator, in which case you might as well use the Zalman solution.

It may have risen a bit. I had high hopes for the NV5. But it wasn't good enough. Fortunately, those two aren't very expensive. :)

Another recommendation for the VF700. I started off with the NV5 but it wasn't quiet enough.. most review sites say 'silent' when they really mean 'relatively quiet' imo.

The VF700 cools my 6800GT nicely @ 5v (56C at 400/1100Mhz, the reference 6800 Ultra speed!) and is approaching silent (for me that means I can sleep with it on).

I have a silencer 5 on my 6800 ultra and it sucks :(
The fan isn't that loud but has an awful buzzing noise, and I know others that have the same. Getting a VF700 soon, I think... is the CU worth the 5 dollars over the ALCU?

As said elsewhere in the forum, the performance of the AlCu and the Cu version of Zalmans CPU-cooler CNPS7000 does not differ much so that might also hold true for the VF700. However, a price difference of 5 dollar is not much either and since a 6800 Ultra consumes around 70W at load there might be a noticeable performance difference between the two, so maybe the all-copper version will be a better buy for you.

Remember that the CU version is considerably hevier and might put a lot of strain on the interfacing port.

I'm really pleased with my VF700 AlCu.

I'm quite happy with my VF700-Cu on a 6800GT. Compared to stock (eVGA PCIe), it runs about 10C or more cooler. In fact, I could overclock to Ultra speeds and run cooler than the stock cooler at stock speeds, at something like 7V on a FanMate 2.

Although it doesn't vent hot air, it does blow enough air through my mangled NB47J that is under the 6800 GT (DFI nF4 Ultra-D) that the NB47J appears to work quite well even when running a heavy GPU load.

EDIT: Link to my mangled NB47J + VF700 pics.

i would not worry about the vf700-CUs weight much, the artic silencer weighs more.

just got my CU version today and installed it
temps are about 3-4 degrees warmer at idle at around 4V than the silencer at 12V, and needless to say much much quieter
this thing below 6V is inaudible w/ the case closed, im quite happy with my purchase...anyone wanna buy a nvsilenecer 5? :P
but seriously, huge recommendation for the zalman, thumbs up

EDIT: this definitely weighs less than the silencer, and doesnt make my card sag like the other one did, which kinda bothered me
