CPU: AMD 3000+ Winchester 119€
RAM: 1GB GEIL 89€

Looking good!
I'm about to buy almost the same components.
Is this Geil Ram 1x1GB or 2x512 MB? And wich speed?
Are you going to replace the fans on the mobo GC? Most stock fans are really noisy.
I'm choosing Nexus fans while they are pretty cheap in Holland. I'm waiting a couple of weeks until the AMD with Venice cores are for sale.

2x512. Speed is as follows:
Timings CAS Latency (CL) 2,5
RAS-to-CAS-Delay (tRCD) 4
RAS-Precharge-Time (tRP) 4
Row-Active-Time (tRAS) 8
Command Rate (CMD) 2 T

Yes, I'm thinking of getting a Zalman VF700 for the GC. The card is standard nvidia design so I don't expect any problems.

re the MB chipset fan, apparently it's not very noisy. It's one of the things that made me think twice about my first option, the Asus A8N-SLI deluxe, whose chipset fan apparently develops a very annoying noise over time.

Good idea, though they'll be more expensive than the Winchester. Well, at least they'll push other prices down.

I thought 2T is a fairly significant performance hit compared to 1T.

Got some Geil RAM yesterday.

kit of 2 512MB 2.5, 3, 3, 6, T1.

Worked fine at 410 (Couldnt run any faster, the 2500+ HBarton couldnt take it. hehe.

I Didnt know they did 2.5, 4, 4, 8. except in 1GB sticks like mine, which are rated at 3, 4,4,8, but run at 2.5, 3, 3, 7, or default @ 220.

I know, but they'll probably be expensive and hard to find initially, won't they?

Apart from that, I'm not sure what benefits Venice will offer for a non-advanced user who has been using PCs for 13 years without overclocking a thing

SSE3 and you can run it at lower voltage which will equal power savings and noise reduction. resale is going to be better too.

Suggest a Zalman VF700 for the 6600GT.

Thanks for the advice. Initially, I'll use it with the stock fan, in order to check that the card operates correctly before voiding the warranty. Then I'll go to town with the VF700!

I don't think there is any correlation with how "advanced" you are, and whether you have ever over/under clocked anything. But I would agree that the benefits of Venice are not worth chucking an existing equivalent CPU that one has installed or delaying a purchase in most situations.
