30amps on the 12volt rail?

Post by pyro » Sun Mar 19, 2006 6:45 am

Im piecing up a system that includes a ati x1900xt. ATI's site says the psu should have 30amps on the 12volt rail. The most the local shop has is 22amps(Thermaltake PurePower 560W Active PFC). What should I be looking for to power this card? Would that psu be suffiecient?

thx

Since ATX 2.x form says the PSUs should have a max of 20A per 12V rail then ATIs (and I think Nvidia does the same) post is rather stupid.
Not sure on what motherboard and so you have but I think all MBs with PCI-Ex has ATX 2.x system.
Since that PSU is ATX 1.3 I don't think that one will work for you.

Might be wrong so check you manual or so :-)
What A that is needed per rail for that card I don't know. Might be rail 1+rail 2=30A (15A per each then)
Maby email ATI?

I'm not that familiar with the diff. between atx's(1.3/2x) The mb is a msi platnium plus cpu amd 4k.

ATX 1.3 had only 1 rail of 12V with unspecified A and a 20pin connecter for the motherboard.
ATX 2.0 and above has max 20A per 12V rails and a 24-pin connector. It has 2 or more 12V rails. 1 for the cpu (and something more, forgot what) and 1 for the rest of the system

Then it's lots more but those are the main things.

Your motherboard is 2.0 (or above). If you are going to buy the PSU in a store then ask if you may return it and pic another product if it doesn't work.
Hopefully someone here knows the correct answer but as far as I understand it then 15A per 12V rail (2 rails then) would be enought.

Here's a SPCR link that might help.

Power Supply Fundamentals & Recommendations, Page 3

As stated.. the new spec doesn't support a single 30A rail, so adding them seems to be more realistic.
