Antec Solo / C2D / P5B Deluxe..so do i really need a HSF?

Post by yellowbeard » Tue Jan 02, 2007 12:18 pm

Happy New Year to you all.

simple question. I'm not going to overclock the machine so do i really need a cpu heatsink (and would it fit anyway?) or should i just buy a 92mm front fan instead?

suggested build:
Antec Solo
Seasonic S12 430W
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400
Asus P5B Deluxe WiFi
Corsair Memory PC4200 2x1GB
Samsung SpinPoint P SP2504C
Asus GeForce EN7300GS-HTD

This is really troubling me so any advice would be very well received!

Of course you need a cpu heatsink ... that is why Intel puts one in the box. :?

If you're asking if you really need a fan; you probably need one too.
Maybe you could run it passive with a Scythe Ninja or a Thermalright Ultra-120 if you have a good airflow in your case but even then I would install a low rpm fan just to be sure.

thanks denHerman,

Putting the ninja > asus fit issues aside (i've been reading up). I've got no faith in it fitting together with the rest of the bits and inside a solo case.

So will it fit okay with the rest of the components i listed?

Here's a thread from the general gallery ...

This member installed a Ninja on a P5B-E (which is similar to the deluxe) in a Solo case.
As you can see, it's a tight fit but it works.

I've got a scythe infinity on the asus p5b deluxe, in an antec solo case, and it fits perfectly fine. Well.. it is huge and barely fits, but it does fit.

I just finished dropping the same into a p-150, and I have normal, fumbly fingers. The heatsink, RAM and fan were pre-installed, however. Have on hand several long extension tools (chopsticks, needle-nose pliers, etc.) for the 4-prong 12v plug. Skinny fingers might work.

The board and case are a good combo for clean cabling, especially with the monster heatsink. Most of the bulk connections are at the forward side so little of that blocks flow. There is a nice pocket behind the 3" bays to stuff surplus wiring.

I'm worried about the graphics - Fanless.

That metal thing with all the fins...just see how long your computer runs without it. Sort of like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuKYBb9wPDs
