psu? corsair hx 520 or 620

Post by spacegoast » Mon Jun 25, 2007 8:19 pm

currently i have an amd x2 4400 toledo s939, with evga 8800gts 640mb, 2gb ddr400 patriot ram, two optical drives, a sound blaster audigy 2 sound card, a thermaltake v1 cpu cooler, and 4 case fans in my antec p180 case.

which psu should i get? i do plan on upgrading in the near future to maybe a Q6600 once the price drops or even an E6850, w/ some compatible mobo and new ram (g skill hz possibly).

also, if i wanted to remove the stock fan on the psu, would i be able to connect a fan with 3 pin connector if the stock fan uses a 2pin connector? my current psu has a 2pin connector and i wanted to put a new fan on a while back but i wasnt sure if it would work with a different fan.

Corsair 520W is more than enough. No need to swap this psu fan, it's quiet enough.

I had a similar configuration - MSI Diamond Plus, 8800gtx, 520hx. Consumption never rose above ~300w reported by a kill-a-watt. The 620 is not needed except maybe with two hungry GPUs although it won't hurt anything except your wallet.

Unless you're trying to satisfy some curiosity, I wouldn't touch the PSU fan - it's very quiet.

If you haven't had a PSU with modular cables you're in for a pleasant suprise regarding wire mgmt. Curious, up until a couple of years ago some companies said modular cables were verboten.

yeah. ihave the 620. I do think that I got more power leads. more "rails" with high amperage. sometimes it is not the total wattage but the available wattage per power line that you are using. 520 or 620 never is from one line , its added from all of them right?

This states that they both have three rails and we don't need to be concerned about one getting overloaded as another will be used automatically.

I thought that spcr stated that the amperage for those rails are not the same from unit to unit.

one has to get 100 watts from somewhere, it isnt the hd cables either.

a bit of corporate smoke and mirrors there :). Reality is Corsair psu's are single 12V rail, so no issues of overloading 12V rails.

So it appears that there have been (generously speaking) liberties taken in the marketing speak to meet the ATX12V 2.x and EPS12V specs. This doesn't make me less satisfied with my HX520 but it makes me wonder what other Corsair claims should be questioned. This fits in with the fact that I have never received a rebate from them for any of the five or so purchased products. Needless to say, I don't buy anything now that has a rebate (one that's not instant).
