Need help w new silent build w NSK4480, X2 5600+

Post by pjeremy » Tue Nov 13, 2007 7:52 am

Hi,

I'm about to build a new computer due to my P4's untimely demise.
Therefore I'm on a tight budget.

This is what I have so far:

MB: MSI K9AG NEO2-Digital 55-60 EUR
CPU: AMD X2 5600+ boxed 118-124 EUR
RAM: OCZ 2P800R22GK XTC Platinum 2x1GB (4-4-4-15) 55-64 EUR
HDD: Samsung HD403LJ 72-74EUR
FLOPPY: Teac floppy+24in1 cardreader
CASE: Antec NSK4480 w. 380W PSU 64 EUR

I will also put a WinTV-DVB-S-pci-card, an Audigy2-pci-card
and 1 or 2 LG-dvdrw's in this case.

The onboard graphic is good enough, so there won't be a pci-e card.
I'd like to keep it somewhat quiet and cool.

Now my main concerns are:
* Is the 80mm intake good enough? I'd use a Noctua NF-R8-1800.
* Is the PSU good enough to handle the devices?
* Should I use a different CPU cooler?
* I was thinking of replacing the 120mm fan with a Scythe-SFlex-120mm-1200rpm or 1600rpm. Is the benefit worth 14EUR?

I'd appreciate any advice.

Since you're on budget and you'll be use oboard vga card, getting 800 Mhz DDR2 OCZ seems overshot. 667Mhz Kingston Value ought to be enough and cheaper. But if there isn't much price difference, keep it the OCZ, in case you get powerful VGA card for gaming.

You probably do not even need front intake fan... try without 80 mm fan at the first.

Another great choice for exhaust fan is sharkoon 1000 rpm 120mm "golf ball" i.e. Silent Eagle 1000. Its cheaper than S-flexes. Noise Blocker Black Silent X1 would be another great budget fan.

If you're on a budget, I cant believe you're not getting yate-loons. 5$ a piece. or so.

Perhaps they are not available where you live, and if thats the case, I understand.

I'm suprised you're going with such an expensive processor. Have you considered the black edition of the 5000+? Its unlocked, you probably could overclock it to 2.8ghz, much like that 5600+

The RAM you picked out also looks expensive. Crucial 2GB kits have been going for 50-60$ without rebate in the US.

Hi thejamppa,

the price difference between the OCZ/Corsair/KingstonValue-667s with 5-5-5-15 timings and the OCZ-800 is ~5EUR, so this is negligible.

Thank you for recommending the Silent Eagle (costs 8EUR).

I also forgot to mention the budget limit. It is set at 450EUR, current setup is 430EUR including shipping. Of course, the cheaper the happier my bank account.

While reading the forums and checking the shops I noticed the AMD X2 BE-2350 and the AMD X2 EE 4600+, both drawing significantly less power (45W/65W compared to 89W for the 5600+) and both being supported by the MSI board.
The prices are 79,- for a boxed BE-2350 and 84,- for the X2 EE 4600+.
Unfortunately I couldn't find a benchmark that compares these two with the 5600+, however, I found one comparing the 2350 and the Intel E2140 and E2160 here.
The E2160 is a bit better than the BE-2350 and the price is 71,-, both of course lose against the AMD X2 5000+ and hence against the 5600+.
The E2180, which should be slightly better, but isn't in the benchmark, costs 77,-.
I haven't found a decent and cheap board for the E21x0 yet, any recommendations?
It needs 2 PCI slots, ATX, onboard graphic, onboard lan, and the chips must be linux-compatible.

Hi protellect,
indeed, the yate-loons aren't available. :(
The black edition of the 5000+ costs 124EUR as well, thus I didn't pay attention to it, but you are correct, the 5600+ is just too expensive for me at the moment.
Crucial 800 is more expensive (70EUR) and 667 costs 50-55EUR.

Couldn't find a board for the e21x0 that I could warm up to, thus, after carefully pondering the pros and cons, I think the X2 EE 4600+ boxed for 84,- is the best choice.
Any last comments/objections before I order?

I went ahead and bought what I've written in the first post, except I changed the CPU to the AMD X2 5200+ EE.
I also got a Noctua NF-R8-1800 and an Scythe SFlex 1200rpm as I got them cheap (for 10EUR, the SilentEagle would have been 9EUR) at the shop I finally ordered (everything ~390EUR).
Now my only remaining question is in regards to the stock cooler of the AMD. How good does it cool and how loud is it?

While I'm not able to purchase a different cooler at the moment, I would be able to do so in 2-3 months.
However, as I'm used to big, roomy towers (my old one is HxW: 65cmx25cm), I am not sure which cooler would fit into such a small case as the NSK4480.
Could you recommend a decent, silent one?
