Need advice for a new rig
Hi there fellow silencers.
I have been reading the forum for a few mounts now, so when the time came to finally build my rig, i decided to register.
I've been stuck on my laptop for nearly a year now, so the new PC should be able to handle newer games (ex. GTA4), but it's mostly for browsing and movies.
I am considering two types of builds, a cheeper AMD build and an i5 one
CPU: 1st. AMD Athlon 2 620 x4 / 2nd. Intel i5 750
MoBO: Asrock A790GMH/128M / Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3
CPU Coller: Scythe Ninja MINI rev B / Scythe NINJA 2 rev B
RAM: 4GB DDR3 PC10600 A-DATA VITESTA
HDD: Samsung F3 1TB (hope it's not to loud)
Case: Antec SOLO possibly replacing exhaust fan with Noctua NF-S12-800, and run Ninja passively
Powersupply: Nexus Value 430
My biggest problem is picking a GPU. I was thinking of a Radeon 4670, i don't know how hot a passive one would get, or if it would suite my needs.
For the i5 i would like a Radeon 4850, wouldn't like a passive one though, was thinking either Powercolor Radeon 4850 1GB PCS or a Mushkin Ultimate FX Radeon 4850 512 MB (which has an Arctic Cooling Accelero L2 Pro). I think the cheapest 4850 + Accelero S1 rev2 would be a bit expensive where I live + i would need a 92mm fan to then.
Any suggestion is welcome!

Howdy!
I haven't used AMD CPUs, I won't comment too much on that part. They do run a bit hotter than than the intels so just from a heat point of view, I'd go with the 750 (which I hear is amazing anyway). For the cooler, go with a Mugen 2 instead as it's supposed to outperform the ninja. Though if you're planning on using it on 1156, you'll have to purchase an extra backplate for it. Also, my mugen came with a scythe 120mm so that'd save you a bit of trouble. The heatsink comes in more than one packages so make sure that the one your order does include one.
I was planning on getting a 4850 myself but I read some horror stories about keeping the VRM on that card cool when you throw in third party cooling. Cooling the GPU itself doesn't seem to be much of an issue, it's just most cases don't have the airflow to cool the VRM even if they have heatsinks on them. I personally don't mind running games at medium or medium-high and my 8800GT handles most games nowadays fine. It just died and I'm replacing it with a 4770 which is much cooler than 48XX series and I'd recommend it if you're not planning no running everything maxed out. If you do plan on getting an S1 R2, just zip-tie the extra 120mm to it.
I'd get a case with more airflow if you plan on passive cooling a GPU. The solo will probably suffice for just the CPU heatsink.
Finally, I'd get a 550W PSU, just to be safe (4850 eats up lotsa power ).
Good luck!

What's your monitor resolution and do you want to max out the GTA4 effects and AA/AF? This'll determine the amount of video card you need.
As for the 4850:
4850: high idle power, lower price, known aftermarket coolers.
5750: similar performance, low idle power, oem cooler is not that great and no aftermarket coolers, yet.

I have an AMD Phenom II x3 720 and Scythe Mugen II with a 10% overclock. Temps are in the 30s with a single Scythe Slipstream at 700rpm. I've got the same fan on the Mugen, but it isn't needed for most activities.cowsled wrote:Howdy!

Thanks guys for your input,
I've decided, and ordered a few of the parts today
Stuck mostly to my original build
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3
CPU: i5- 750
Ram: 4 GB DDR3 2000 Vitesta X
PSU: Nexus Value 430
HDD: Samsung F3 1TB
Case: Antec SOLO with Noctua NF-S12-800
I am holding off with the buy of the heatsink, just waiting for the Mugen 2 Rev. B to launch, and still yet undecided on the Video Card (5750 Vapor-X vs. SCS from Powercolor). At the moment I have a 19" Samsung with a resolution of 1440x900, I plan to change that, but not in the recent future.
