Fit-PC2 + Dell G2410 = Sub-30W web browsing PC?

Post by AuraAllan » Mon Oct 26, 2009 2:48 pm

Hi,

I'm considering buying a Fit-PC2 and a Dell G2410 to get the "ultimate" low power web browsing PC.

Fit-PC2 is rated at 8W MAX. Tests shows that it can occasionally go up to 10-11W depending on the HDD used.
I will be using my MTRON 32GB which shoud hold the power usage to a minimum and make sure the Fit-PC is silent.

Dell G2410 is rated at "Less than 20 Watts (typical)".

That sounds like a nice sub-30W web browsing PC to me.

Any comments on this?

Fit-PC2 is great, but you can't upgrade the RAM, it is onboard. Anyway the CPU is enough good to do the average work tasks: surfing the web, office... (all my PCs are atoms)

Do you really need a huge screen? A 17" has lower power than 22" (my Samsung consumes only 13 watts). Don't seem very convenient to go so low on PC consumption , and then have a power-hungry huge screen.

Yes I know I can't upgrade the RAM. 1 GB is plenty for XP or any Linux distro so thats no problem.

I wouldn't call a "less than 20W" 24" screen powerhungry. Far from it.
I currently use a 22" and I'd really like to have a screen atleast the same size again as I like to edit photos/videos sometimes. I'm open to suggestions though.
Note: Photo/Video editing won't be done on the Fit-PC.

Anybody have a suggestions for a good ~20" really low power screen?

The results are quite good. For web browsing and reading text low brightness is desired anyway, around 130-150cdm. At that value it will probably need around 15 watts which is excellent for a 24inch monitor.
