New system -- input needed

Post by kittle » Wed Apr 14, 2010 1:58 pm

After 5 years my desktop is going to get upgraded.

I already have the following:
GPU (GTX 285, 2GB)
Case: supermicro full tower
(both are in my sig)
Monitor: 2x Samsung 970p
Keyboard+Mouse

I'm looking to buy the following:
Motherboard: Asus P6X58D Premium
CPU: i7 980x @ 3.0 or 3.33GHz
RAM: 6x Kingston ValueRAM DDR3-1333 2048MB
PSU: Seasonic-X 650w (from the spcr reccomended list)

Boot drive: Intel X25-M 80GB SSD
Storage drive: WD Caviar Black 2.0TB
DVD: Pioneer 22X DVD-RW (or re-use the plextor I already have)

HSF: ???
Case Fans: ???

My existing case is a bit bigger than the Antec P190, so it will handle fairly tall heatsinks, but since the motherboard will be on its side, I dont want a very heavy one either.

The system will be used for pretty much "everything". Internet, Movies, office, Games, general Programming, Game programming, Research, and F@H. I will also do several or all of the above at once -- so multitasking ability is key. The goal is to have serious overkill now, so that the system will stay viable for the next 3-5 years.

With a high TDW CPU, this wont be a silent system, but my goal is to get it quiet enough so i can leave it running in the next room (with the door open) while I sleep.

Ideas and suggestions for a HSF and case fans would be much appreciated, as well as any critique on the choice of components.

Heatsink: Prolimatech Megahalems if it is not too heavy for you (or if you will be OC'ing - Noctua DH-14 maybe, but probably too heavy for your comfort level). Otherwise consider a Xigmatek S1283 with bolt through kit or even a Coolermaster Hyper 212+

Fans: Nexus Real Silent 120mm and 92mm variants are the default option.

While I really haven't experimented much with the Scythe Gentle Typhoon fan I bought, it seems pretty good. You can get them in both 92mm and 120mm sizes at a range of rpm speeds as well.

You may not be aware that the 980X comes with the new DBX-B cooler as here http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1245/2/. There's another reference here http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/ha ... iew-3.html and here http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/ha ... ew-19.html. The fan is a 100mm Nidec and there is a Quiet/Performance mode switch on the cooler itself. In Quiet mode it seems to be entirely acceptable, but clearly it is no TRUE.

So if the priority is quiet and there is no plan to overclock it seems that for the first time Intel are providing a stock cooler which does not as a matter of course need to be replaced with something else. And look, no push-pins - it screws into a backplate. I think Intel are beginning to catch on.

the xigmatec is almost my default option -- ive used it on several friends PCs with good results. So that one is a good canidate.

I can also just start with the stock 980x fan and see what its like. The only issue thre is if the backplates arent compatible between heatsinks.

I'll fiddle with the fans right away and find something that works good. -- thanks for the tip on the 980x stock fan.

Thanks, I was aware of this though. Still, I'm dubious of their claims as to quietness. The way I figure it, if the OP is buying such an expensive CPU, getting a reasonable heatsink and quiet fan combo isn't going to blow the budget too much.
