advice on i3 gaming small rig

Post by doomcraft » Sat Aug 20, 2011 1:01 pm

Hi,

first of all let me say I'm a big fan of this site and forums which are really informative and interesting.
I'm planning on building my first smallish modern gaming rig but I still have some doubts about some of the components and cases to choose.

Anyway, what I'm planning to acquire:

cpu: INTEL CORE i3 2100 (3.1GHZ) SKT 1155
memory: KINGSTON KIT 4GB DDR3 1333MHZ HYPERX (CL7)
gpu: SAPPHIRE TECHNOLOGY RADEON HD 6770 - 1 GB GDDR5
hard drive: 2.5' 350GB Hitachi 7200rpm

motherboard: GA-H67MA-USB3-B3 (micro-atx)
case: SilverStone Grandia GD05B
or
motherboard: GA-H67N-USB3 Rev. B3 (mini-atx)
case: Silverstone SG05-BB - 450W

CPU Cooler: I have no idea.
PSU Cooler: I have also no idea.

The SG05 seems much harder to assemble for a newbie but it's very small and that's awesome.

So, I'm not sure if:
- what cpu or psu to get
- should I get a radeon vapor card because they're quieter?
- will this setup be quiet and efficient?
- am I missing something?

cheers and thanks for any feedback.

Looks very nice.

If you're looking for PSU recommendations, I'd suggest Antec Earthwatts supplies, or Seasonic Supplies.
Antec 380w routinely runs $40 in the US and shouldn't have any problems powering said system.

If you're sticking with air cooling for the video card I find that most dual slot stock coolers are fairly quiet.
Read up on reviews and you shouldn't having problems finding a good one, but I generally just buy the cheapest one with the warranty I like. [Example]

There are a number of inexpensive CPU coolers that would work fine, I generally buy the cheapest ones from xigmatek that are "tower" style coolers that take 120mm fans.
You can usually get them for less than $30.

Since you're looking at something that might need low profile if the tower styles won't fit, perhaps something else like this low profile heatsink might be what you need.
I've also used the scythe shuriken and was pretty happy with it, other than it sometimes wouldn't mount because stuff on the motherboard was too tall.

thanks protellect, the scythe shuriken was the missing piece in my equipment.

I'll post pictures as soon as the system is built. cheers.
