whats wrong with my cpu?

oky guys i got a slight problem with prime95. After 12 hours of torture testing my cpu fails to give a number. Its a rounding error from what i remeber which usually means the cpu is overclocked too much (its at stock and i am not gonna overclock it at all) or its not got enough juice.

Its default voltage is 1.65v, it failed on that setting (12 hours). Then tried 1.7v it failed on that too however 1 hour later than at stock voltage.. I am trying 1.75v now. Can anyone exaplin why it is failing?

Its a barton 2500 @ stock. it has not been overclocked. Used to be in an older pc which was then upgraded i am now it putting in a linux box. I got an abit NF-7 S rev2. at load it never goes above 50c even now at 1.75 volts its at 48c.

quick update at 1.75v @ stock it just managed 8 hours before giving a rounding error again. My next option is to put the fsb down to 155 instead of 166 at the default multi of 11.

I'll have just above 1.7ghz and hopefully it will survive this round of prime95. My vcore is a touch above default at 1.675

It might be a ram problem. Try reseating the modules after cleaning the slots using compressed air to blow out all the dust. Make sure they are in nice and tight. Then....run memtest for at least 30 minutes or 1 pass through the entire 8 tests. If it turns up an error, try increasing the voltage to the memory or lowering the timings. Repeat memtest until no errors occur. You might also want to try running the test for an hour or two just to make sure the memory is not the culprit.

~best of luck to you

oky i tried memtest and the memory seems fine. I did it for 4 hours and i think it made like 13/14 pass's.

I am gonna try and lower the fsb to 155mhz which will give me 1.7 ghz and see what happens then.

I once had a motherboard that failed prime95 testing at stock voltage and cpu speed. After heaps of fiddling I had to underclock the cpu before it ran safely. Finally after throwing out that awful VIA motherboard the same cpu and ram worked at normal speed. Moral of the story - don't forget the motherboard chipset.

The NF7-S is rated for 200mhz and i'm running it at 166 which is the default for my xp 2500. I guess i could try and put a few more volts through the chipset the zalman heatsnik ontop of it is barely warm.

Heat had nothing to do with it in my case. Could be faulty chips though.

I see well i think same here the heat is not an issue. I tried the 155 mhz FSB and it ran prime95 for 17 hours before i got tired and stopped it.

I have reseated the zalman heatsink and i think it sits on the chip much better than it did before. Gonna try the test at 166 again just above stock volts and see what happens.
