The ASUS A8N-SLI Premium has a chip_fan header on the motherbard and I'm wondering if that could be used for the forthcoming Zalman VF900. I'm not using a fan for the chipset so it will be available. Anyone know?

anyway, a constructive comment might be:
Don't see why not, it's a 12v header isn't it?. As long as it's not speed controlled by your chipset temperature and it would be even better if it is possible to control it's speed manually via BIOS.

There is nothing I could find in the manual about the Chip Fan except in the BIOS is a Disabled or Enabled feature for speed warning. The other fan headers that offer warnings are CPU Fan and Chassis 1 Fan speed warning--and they give options in RPM, but the Chip Fan does not give any RPM choices, only Enabled or Disabled.

Sounds like there is no advantage for you in using it then (unless Speedfan can adjust it's speed).
I'm assuming you'll want to run the VF900 fan slower than 12v speed. The VF700 comes with a fixed-speed reducing (approx 12v & 5v) adaptor which is probably what'll come with the VF900 too.
If you have a top end GPU then maybe it has temp monitoring and therefore speed control possibilities?

The VF900 is different than the VF700. The VF900 fan gets connected to a Fanmate 2 and then to a fan header on the motherboard.

If all you need is a 12v 3-pin fan header, then you should be fine with your unused chipset one.
If you want temperature related speed control then the search continues

EDIT: Hmmm, couldn't resist downloading your manual and having a look (there's a revised version on the ASUS site)
Section 4.5.4 doesn't show your options too well as they show the screenshot with Qfan 'disabled'
I'd boot into BIOS and 'enable' Qfan and just see what options that brings up. You can always 'disable' it again if you want.

With the A8N-E. the manual says Asus Q-Fan supports CPU FAN and CHASSIS FAN. The chipset fan is synchronized with CPU FAN.

I have noticed chipset fan rpm decreasing when temps are lower, so I suppose it works.

Don't know whether this is the same with the A8N-SLI Premium though.
