i have an opty 148 at 3ghz with 1.55v on a epox 9npa+ultra motherboard

how much power, and on what rails, is this going to pull

alot of research later has really only gotten me closer, but still no clue

please help a dumb kid out

my rating using the TDP or tcasemax or whatever is 85w, but that doesnt help for what rails(obviously 12v, but how much and how much on the others and in amps) and im not sure if that even holds true for when its overclocked

the numbers i stated above are not what im running it at, but possibly could be though the 1.55 volts is high, we will see

anyway ill appreciate and welcome all help!!

thx guys

according to this calculator for PSU's

http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculator.jsp

Your overclocked Opteron 148 draws 91 Watts at 100% utilization

91 watts / 12 Volts = 7.58333 Amps

All the power a CPU draws is off the 12 Volt Line.

This is a good calculator for figuring out your PSU needs. Many argue you only need 300W-400W others say 600W+, but if your overclocking just be sure you pick a PSU with stable voltages on the +12V rails and dual rails if possible.

thx for the really really fast reply, yea my fsp 450 is pretty good on the rails

im just curious as i had some errors with my hd and after running extensive tests on the hd, it passed!

asking around my psu came into question, and you can see in my sig my setup, and personally I think it can handle it

im just trying to get as much info as possible

edited :: I just used that calculator, and I got 143w for my overclocked cpu. Not sure what we did different. I selected the opty 939 148 at 1.40v. I then selected overclock my cpu and put in 3000 and 1.55v. It then gave me a result of 143. That means almost 12amps off the 12v line just for the cpu?

I don't trust PSU calculators, I don't know why, but they always give enormous figures.
Have a look there to get an idea of real life figures : http://www.silentpcreview.com/article265-page1.html
Your Opteron shouldn't be that far from an Athlon Venice (consumption proportionnal to frequencie, and to vCore²).

The power consumption will definitely be higher than the V^2 proportion will show. The calculators are probably pretty close.

The number I got was right underneith the overclocked CPU data, next to where you click "overclock". It says "Overclocked CPU Wattage:"

The Calculator adds an extra 43W for an initial value. As for the rest of the discrepancy, i'm unsure.

It's true calculators can inflate your true needs. For instance this wattage is given at 100% CPU usage, during 100% PSU usage as well. But it does give you a good idea of what you will need for a max value. But really, just something with solid rails and enough +12V amperage will be fine.
