AMD 64 3000+ to 4000+ noise increase?
Hi,
I'm thinking of moving my 3000+ to another pc and upgrading to a single core 4000+. I've been happy with the fan/heatsink that came with the 3000+ as it only gets noisy when I'm playing loud games anyway. Anyone got any idea how much noise increase I can expect just with the supplied fan/heatsink for the 4000+?

What revision of the 3000+ do you have? The stock heatsink that AMD has shipped with their processors has evolved considerably in the time that the processor has been around. The heat output has also dropped considerably, so it's possible that the 4000+ that you purchase may actually be cooler than your current chip. To a certain extent it's luck of the draw though. Check this thread to get an idea of how to gauge the heat output of your current chip, and estimate how hot the new chip is likely to be.
The E6 Venice's (bar the 3800+) are rated at 67W. The 3700+, 3800+ and 4000+ are rates as 89W.
I myself have just upgraded from an E3 Venice 3000+ to a 3700+ (OEM failed dual core) and have been very suprised and annoyed to see how much the temperatures have risen. The Venice used to idle in the low 30's, whether at stock or overclocked to 2400Mhz at 1.5V but the 3700+ idles at 40 degrees at 1.35V. This causes the fan on my Freezer 64 Pro to spin to its maximum speed, and therefore becomes by far the loudest thing in my case.
Retail 3500+ prices are pretty low at the moment (£75) so I might pick up an E6 version of one of those, as they are the fastest 939 parts rated at 67W. I will then be able to sell both the 3000+ and the 3700+. What does everyone think of this?

I'm after a higher multiplier for more speed when overclocking... Anyway, I have a new retail 3500+ on the way, plus an EPoX EP-9U1697 GLI to use whilst my EP 9NPA+ Ultra is being RMA'd.
