eVGA680i M/B compatible with Ninja Rev.B?

Post by NeoNSX » Wed Nov 22, 2006 2:01 am

I'm contemplating the purchase of the new eVGA 680i mainboard (model: 122-CK-NF68-AR) and naturally I'm worried if a Ninja Rev.B will fit. I read a comment where one owner had problem with his Mine heatsink...

Anyone using this mainboard with a Ninja? Thanx for your time.

Thanx for the reply. At least i know someone has read this thread. :)

That guy stuffed up his board because he had the original ninja w/ backplate. The Rev.B Ninja doesnt use a backplate.

My next big concern is the NB running so hot it can't be cooled passively. :( I wonder if a Thermalright HR-05 / HR-05-SLI could be used to replace the stock cooler and fix this prob. One question seems to lead to another :)

I'm sitting here, typing this reply on an E6600 cooled passively by a rev.B Scythe Ninja, sitting on an eVGA 680i, sitting in an SPCR P180 8), with the 3 stock case fans all set to low, and it all works fine. And that's with an eVGA 8800GTS in the case too. (plus a Seasonic M12 700W)

I am having annoying sound issues from the MCP fan though, and it's the only downside. The case was amazingly quiet without the MCP fan, but the MCP just ran way to hot.

I've added more to this thread: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/for ... 2003591831

Rockfrog, you are my new best friend! :D You have the setup I will have (already got a P180 and E6600; just need to change the M/B) btw, any photos?

I could have bought one today but didn't after reading this thread: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php ... ge=2&pp=20
Half way down the thread, OLBaID claims he had to shave the edge of his Ninja Rev.B because of the R50 capacitors. But you're not having this prob?

Sorry to hear you're having problems with the MCP temp. I've read other people are too. The only remaining big questions i'm TRYING to research before buying an 680i m/b is:

1) Is it possible to run the MCP passive if you have a 120mm fan on the BOTTOM of the ninja - assuming a 120mm will fit. (to improve airflow)

2) Will a HR-05 be a suitable substitute for cooling the MCP?

3) Will the Ninja clear the heatpipes on an Asus Striker Extreme?

Will a Ninja fit in here?

I'm kinda hoping to get the EVGA over the Asus Striker because 1) Sooo much cheaper, 2) Can't source a Striker at the moment, 3) Asus have peed me off with their memory compatibility issues with my P5W. :x Bitten once, twice angry.

Found this very useful thread for fitting blackplates to 680i mainboards. Page two shows what needs to be cut-out to get the Ninja Rev.B to fit.

Mine too

I didn't have to shave off quite as much from the Ninja mounting bracket as they showed in the above post, but I have the EVGA 680i board, which isn't the one shown in those pictures so maybe the capacitors are closer to the CPU socket.

I'm also having trouble with the MCP heatsink. To anser the question above, there isn't room between the MCP and the Ninja for a fan. I tried placing a 120mm fan so it blew on the MCP by mounting it half on the Ninja on the side facing the front of the case (sorry I'm at work, not pictures), but the MCP was running at 64 degrees doing nothing but watching the BIOS temp monitor.

Wow, run on sentence. Sorry.

Anyone else have any luck cooling the MCP? The stock fan that comes with it is louder than all the other fans in my case combined.

I just bought this motherboard now that they've sorted out the bios issues and because it's supposed to overclock better than the extremely expensive Asus Striker.

Am looking to experiment with overclocking and a 680i is made for OC'ing (If you're not going to experiement with OC'ing it's a bit expensive.)

But if you're looking for a quiet PC while keeping heat down how about considering watercooling? I just tried it out and it's easier than I thought.

Because i dont want to stuff around with water... i dont like the thought of a leak. Plus I own a P180 and have no desire to drill holes in it. thanx for suggesting it though

No problems I can understand the concern about leaks. Well good choice with the 680i anyway.

(All for drilling, not sure why you'd want to do that; all I did was attach the radiator to the P180 rear fan slot on the inside of the case using normal screws and the holes already in the fan.)
