Undervolting AMD X2 4200+ AM2 @ LR

Post by Meato » Wed Jan 10, 2007 10:04 pm

Stumbled on this gem of an article while looking for AM2 Sempron undervolting. Definitely worth a read.

Highlights:
1.125V Core completely stable vs. 1.350V stock
Reduced idle power consumption by 11W
Reduced 100% load power consumption by 28W
Reduced Core temps by 2C at idle & 6C at 100% load

Wouldn't it be better to use RMClock or similar and go with variable voltage and frequency instead?

Isn't it common knowledge that you can undervolt from the BIOS?

That's only common knowledge after you learn it for the first time.

Besides, with Cool'n'Quiet and SpeedStep it's not so much necessary as it was, hence not so much common and discussed.

For another point of comparison my 4200+ (65W) is 100% stable at 1.05V.

That's very good. My 3800+ 65W needed 1.1V for 2GHz and 1.2V for 2.2GHz. Wouldn't overclock beyond that, no matter what voltage...
