sorry, i have no direct experience with that one. looks like the passive cooling has gotten good reviews.

a) NSK3480 rear stock fan + Ninja Mini fanless + front 92mm fan(s)
b) NSK3480 rear stock fan + Ninja Plus Rev.B + Ninja Plus Rev.B stock fan
c) NSK3480 rear stock fan + Zalman CNPS-7000/7500
I have the M2NPV-VM in two builds. One in an Antec Minuet with a Zalman CNPS-8700LED, and one in an Antec NSK2400 with a Thermalright XP-120. The northbridge is considerably cooler in the Minuet, most likely from the donut-shaped airflow pattern through the Zalman. The 2400's airflow pattern is also down through the Thermalright, but then sideways out the side of the 2400, so there's very little airflow over the northbridge. That northbridge runs considerably hotter (although without trouble).

I have a third build with a completely different motherboard in an Antec NSK3400 case that has been modified with internal cable cutouts to make it much more like the 3480. I use a Ninja Rev B with the Scythe fan that came with it. It's tight, but it's fabulous cooling for the CPU. Were it an M2NPV-VM board in there, I would definitely expect very little airflow over the northbridge, even with 120 rear case fan and 92mm front fans. If I *had* to put the M2NPV-VM in the 3400 style case, I think I'd either go with your option C, or else go with a mini ninja + fan, and try to strap a small, quiet fan (maybe 60mm) over or to the side of the Northbridge. I might try that in my NSK2400 system.

I think the M2NPV-VM and 3400/3480 case is a less-than-ideal match because of the hot northbridge, unless you can work a way to put a small fan on it.

Two days ago I bought the ABIT motherboard I named before, so I'm going to resell my ASUS M2NPV-VM.
Apart differences in connection layout, lack of parallel port and HDTV card (that I don't need), the ABIT NF-M2 nView has an heatpipe that connects NB cooler with a larger heatsink located between the rear panel and the CPU socket (a system called "Silent OTESâ„¢" by ABIT), and also a small passive cooler on the southbridge chipset.
Now I'm waiting all the components to be delivered (including a Ninja Plus Rev.B - opted for b) with a different mobo) to assemble the new PC and check system temperatures (both ABIT BIOS and Windows utilities seem to be able monitor temperatures other than CPU one).
Thank you very much for all your comments and suggestions.

Pay extra attention to routing your cables in the 3480 case. Extend cables if you need to. I need to on my 3400, but I think the 3480 comes with longer cables to begin with. If you're very careful with running cables out of the way, the Ninja works very well in this case, because it is very large and is physically close to the rear 120mm fan.

Back to give you some data about temperatures I took in my PC:

[Heatsink + fan configuration: CPU/Sys/AUX °C (idle); CPU/Sys/AUX °C (full load)]

AMD heatsink + AMD fan: 35/30/35; 36/52/41
Scythe NINJA fanless: 34/26/36; 33/48/47
Scythe NINJA + Scythe fan (present configuration): 27/26/36; 29/42/46

Note that room temperature was between 15 and 20°C, that my CPU is an AMD Athlon X2 BE-2400, designed for 45W TMP and capable of scaling the frequency down to 1000 MHz, that I replaced the rear fan that comes with the case with an orange Nexus fan I had in another PC, because the latter @7V was quieter than the former @5V.
