Coolest "capable" socket A cpus?

Post by jeffmd » Wed Aug 08, 2007 1:16 am

my file server beast is just putting out to much heat. I am going to finally upgrade it to a large single drive (its currently running 3 older drives with tight sleep timers), and while i hate to nerf its strength lower then it allready is, its an XP1500, I really need to reduce its heat output.

So what are some of the coolest running cpus for a socket A mobo that are capable of running current web browsers (straight download) and Azureus (resource hogging bit torrent downloader). I list capable cause I know there are a few of those non intel/amd cpus out there that are fine when coupled with low resource programs like win2k and firefox 1.x, but I need something that wont die underneath the might of Azureus and its occasional 12 downloads when I decide to catch up on my anime one weekend, or when I need to split an 8 gig video capture. ;)

Socket A cpu's are so cheap now that I think you might as well just get the 3200+ barton since it is most likely to undervolt and underclock the best (due to it being the highest clocked Socket A cpu available). Bartons are clock for clock better than the thoroughbreds due to the 512k cache, and are certainly more efficient than your 1500+ palomino (.18 micron palomino core vs .13 micron thoroughbred and barton cores, IIRC).

You may want to check that the barton is multiplier unlocked, though. Worst case you get one that isn't, you can still do the superglue and conductive paint trick to connect the bridges.

Man, brings back memories. LOL

Shameless self-promotion: I have a XP-M 2500+ (133*14, 1.45 V stock) that I may be selling within a month. It does 166*12 at stock volts and can go lower than 1.35 V at stock speed if you have a motherboard with tight VRMs.

3200+ tends to be overpriced and locked. Go for the low voltage 2400+ XP-M barton, they are very cheap and always unlocked. Any low voltage will do (2500+ & 2600+ too), but the 2400 tends to be the cheapest.

duron

SPCR's "CPUs Ranked by Noise / Heat" guide says this about durons:
AMD Duron (Spitfire core 800-950MHz) ... 33~42W. Less heat than K7 or K75 but small die area. Easy to unlock multiplier, great performance/price. 1/08/02
I had very good experience with a 950mhz duron on default speed/voltage with a thermalright SI-97 (A?) cooled by a PSU fan only on the lowest RPM.

I also have a XP-M 2600+, but I don't have a suitable undervoltable board for it :(
