Just found this in the Overclock.net forum,
RD790 chipset was made by TSMC and it used 65nm process and its power consumption is wonderful. It is 3W when idle and 10W at most, while Intel X38 is 14.4W and 35W.

Looks promising. Now if only they had better CPUs to use it with.

Here's hoping for decent Linux drivers.

790 is supposed to premiere with AM2+ and Phenom, so there's a lot weighing on the whole package.

Low chipset power and individual power planes for the CPU and memory controller should see a good power drop across the whole setup.

At a recent show Gigabyte had a 790 board on display. It's their first to use all the "Ultra-Durable" goodies for an AMD board. Probably a $200+ multi vid card beast with a lot more bells and whistles than I need. It would be GREAT if they did a version NOT aimed at gamers/overclockers so much-but using all the features that DO add up to high efficiency and stability. I'd love to see the ability to set it do on the fly a mild overclock OR a pretty big Undervolt/underclock. Whichever you need. Sort of Crystal CPU but easier to mess with.

Upgraded architecture....Phenom,can cut the gap on the Core 2,but AMD can't lag on the move to 45nm or they are playing catch-up again.
