New low power Athlon64 chips

Post by autoboy » Wed Sep 19, 2007 7:29 am

AMD is releasing new AM2 single core chips with very low TDP. Read story here. Paired with the new mITX AM2 board, these could make a great low power, small system that is much more capable than the Intel mITX system that is getting a little attention on these forums. It actually has GB ethernet and SATA like a real computer should. Then again, this would surely cost a lot more than $75 like the Intel system.

Interesting.

So what do we think these are? Personally, I reckon that these may still be 90nm chips heavily underclocked and undervolted. I'm guessing that AMD need all their 65nm production capacity for the new Barcelona/Phenom chips + Brisbane.

these are for embedded systems only. I wouldn't expect them to reach desktop retail channels.

But they state they fit in AM2 socket. There are always channels for this kind of stuff, they are just not always our standard channels. The 8W version looks really interesting, but I would think an undervolted and underclocked Sempron could meet the same 8W target. These are probably 90nm chips that are undervolted. The 90nm chips are pretty efficient at very low clocks because they can run very low voltage.

(Although the word 'desktop' doesn't appear once in AMD's press release.)

I wonder how many of those on individual motherboards could be powered by a single 300 watt power supply.

An interesting folding option. Battery power + Pico PSU?

yeah, except my file server contains 5 hard drives. Its hard to find a case that can handle all that and still be small. For now its a no name mATX case with some kinky use elastic and rubber. And its not exactly as quiet as i would like, due to my paranoia about drive heat.

I was annoyed to find that WHS does not support NAS devices.

I have all of my data on 2 1GB NAS devices, there is no local storage. Doh.
