Wolfdale is (almost!) here

Post by djkest » Tue Jan 08, 2008 10:30 am

Hey guys, just thought you'd want to know, DIRECTRON is taking preorders for the new 45nm Wolfdale CPUs. I'm in for an E8400. Estimated ship date is 1/31.

X-bit labs test of new wolfdale CPUs
X-bit labs recently tested the CPUs, they are about 6% faster than the conroe chips, and use much less power. Also, it has a 6MB shared cache, as opposed to 4MB.

E8200: 8x333 = 2.66 GHz, $189
E8400 : 9x333 = 3.0 GHz, $199

Curse you!! Now I'm tempted again. I was convinced we wouldn't see these until March. Then again, I suppose it's still possible that Directron has no idea when they will ship and is being optimistic.

Price is a bit higher than what x-bit predicted. I also had my eye on the E8400 at a price of $183 but I guess $199 isn't bad for pre-order.

I wonder if these will have any issues with existing boards. I may go with the ABIT IP35 Pro myself.

Thanks djkest, I just caved in and ordered an E8400 and don't even have a home for it. I guess I could yank my E4500. I'm in Houston and I get a kick out of going to their warehouse. The waiting area is like a cross between ebay and an asian open air market. You could put together a system browsing through the overstock and 2nd hand parts...no marked prices, just cut a deal once your main order is filled.

$183 is how much Intel sells them to you if you buy 1000+ units of them. $16 profit is not that much, imo. As far as ship date goes, intel announced I think yesterday they were shipping mid to late january. The new quad-cores are coming later... like march

Also take note, you can get a free hat or t-shirt by clicking on the discounts link and adding it to your order.

Looks like all the P35 boards were made with 45nm CPUs in mind, so should be no problem.

I'm optimistic that this new CPU will fold 50% faster while still using a little less power.

Aha, I didn't know that. I agree that $16 isn't so bad. Wonder how long before they pop up on NewEgg.

That's like $75 less than a Q6600.

That's not fair, the 6000+ is a 90nm part, the comparision should be against current 65nm parts.

Maybe if AMD had ever released a fast 65nm dual-core.

They have a non-locked 5000+ for $99. That's 65nm.

Now you want to hear dumb, this thing is set for 2.6GHz, but the 90nm one is set for 3GHz and costs like $175 (has a larger cache too, but still).
Both are unlocked.

This reminds me years ago when I went to a Taco Bell down south and they had free soda refills. People where paying more for large sodas. But the refills were free, so what was the point?

Yeah I love how people get the huge drinks at free refills places. Maybe they don't want to have to get up more than once?

BTW, this is a dead deal. Hopefully people bought these before they sold out.

I still have 3 weeks to wait while my gigabyte motherboard sits there, unused. Sad, I want Intel power, now!

Worst part of the waiting is that prices drop and other products pop up on the radar. For me, a few passive video cards are now available at NewEgg so I might need to add them to my budget too. This could get expensive.

gigabyte P35 DS3R. I was thinking about changing the NB heatsink, but the stock one is pretty huge.

well my e8400 arrived this morning so i'm playing the waiting game now too.. i think i will try and get an EP35 board.

thanks for the review, though it was pretty useless without power consumption figures.. performance seems to be no significant difference from the 65nm processors

I'm tempted to get the E8400... My P5B Deluxe supports it through a beta BIOS update, so once it's official, this could be a very worthwhile upgrade to my E4300 @ 2.4GHz.

Some stores are listing wolfdales as in stock already, including buy.com.

Someone on anandtech also claimed to get an email notification from www.pcsuperstore.com notifying him that his order was shipped - they list 6 in stock at the moment.
