Lowest heat Core2Duo??

Post by m1k30rz » Mon Feb 09, 2009 2:40 pm

Hi guys,

I am looking at a E5300 for my media center PC, it has to be low heat and but it has to be good enough to run High definition TV through my HVR-3000 tuner.

I want to run it passive in my NSK2480 (same as antec fusion) with probably a scythe mini ninja, as the two 120mm fans right beside it will take the air away.

Would the E5300 be capable of this? or are there some lower heat Core2Duo's that are capable of HDTV?

m1k30rz,

I am running a very similar setup to what you are proposing (specs in signature). I think you'll have no problem with your proposed setup. The difference between your E5300 and my E6300 being the clock speed (2.6Ghz vs. 1.86Ghz), FSB (800Mhz vs. 1066Mhz), and process (45nm vs. 65nm). They have the same advertised TDP of 65W. I don't have any experience with the E5300, but I wouldn't be surprised if ran even cooler than the E6300 due to the die shrink.

That being said, mine idles around 40C and have never seen it go above 55C under load. This is with the case fans running ~700 RPM. I would think the E5300 would be more than adequate for your HTPC needs, but I'll let others leave their input to help you make a decision.

The E5300 should have no problems meeting your requirements. Its measured power consumption is very low.

Personally I would use the IGP (G45 or 9300/9400 for Intel) for the decoding if I were you. But it's up to you I guess, if you want XP or Linux that may not be an option.

The duel core Celerons also might be worth looking into. They now are roughly equal to the original dual core P4s in speed(512K cache, 800fsb, etc).

Q: does anyone know when 32mn process chips will be coming out? A TDP of 20W or so would be amazing.

That should be able to cool any 45nm Core 2 Duo, even the top E8600.
