AMD 785G vs 890GX

Post by nyhcbri » Tue Mar 16, 2010 6:26 am

i just purchased a 785g board
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131627
but now i see the new review for the 890gx boards
http://www.silentpcreview.com/gigabyte-890gx
so i need help because im on the fence about swapping these out while i still can. would it be worth the effort and the 30$ extra in board price to swap for this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813131631
i already have a phenom II x4 965 so the unlocking feature is nothing i need. also running 2 sata 2.0 in raid 1 mirror. any ideas?

If you plan on running this board for years with upgrades it might be worth having the USB 3.0/SATA 3 options. If you don't plan on upgrading the HDDs or using a bunch of new-fangled USB 3.0 devices then don't worry about it. You won't see much of a performance boost in your current build, assuming you use discrete graphics.

Edit: Oops, didn't see that you already have SATA 3.0 on your board. So do you plan to use USB 3.0 devices extensively? Might come in handy in 2ish years when it is an overwhelming standard for USB storage.

Stick with the 785G board unless you need/want:
-8x/8x CrossFire instead of 16x/4x
-a faster IGP

silently speaking this new board drops the q-fan and uses something called ASUS Fan Xpert intelligently allows users to adjust both the CPU and chassis fan speed according to different ambient temperature. seems to be very useful to me. i am using a scythe kabuto with a pwm splitter in the cpu input on the motherboard and the SPCR recommended 92mm nexus fan is useless, waaaayyyy to loud. any thoughts on this?
