If you don't have Windows 8, you can check by the upgrade advisor:

If you are running Windows 8, you can check Secure Boot by the following:
1) Start -> PowerShell
2) Run as Administrator
3) Type “confirm-SecureBootUEFI”
if it returns TRUE, you have Secure Boot. Otherwise you don't.

no kidding. it sounds horrendous!

(why would anyone want this "feature"?)

Best part is, I'm pretty sure your own OS won't boot if altered by a virus.

I guess we could argue about whether not booting is better than booting without knowing you are infected. But this certainly seems like the nuclear option of "if anything is broken, everything is".

rootkits run in the background, are potentially undetectable once infected, and could steal sensitive information without user knowledge. Secure boot is meant to mitigate against this. I don't see why anyone who has sensitive information would object to this, when secure boot can be simply turned off.
