After a lot of contemplation, decided to update my PC, which was struggling. Even Dreamchess was taking 10 secs per turn to compute. Looking at Geekbench runs it seems my single core performance will rise from 800 to 1100/1200 but my multicore performance double from ~3000 to ~6000. It was £25 more than a 3600...there's equal speculation that the £25 extra gets me the letter X on the end of a 3600, or that it gets me better binned sillicon. Also the X is gauranteed to do 4.4ghz whereas it's a silicon lottery if the 3600 will do it or not.

Nevertheless I will probably "convert it" into a 65w unit or undervolt it, in the aim of silence. It's going on my D14 with AM4 kit and a pair of A12x25's as well as one as exhaust fan.

I didn't want a chipset fan and believe it or not the cheapest lowest spec AM4 board turns out to have the best VRM's...wierd eh? As it is a MAX edition it is preconfigured for Ryzen 3000 which helps as I don't have a 2000 or below to flash it.

Ram wise I bought DDR4 4400 with the hope to run it around 3700mhz with a really low latency. I skimped on RAM speed with my DDR3 setups and suffered (about 15% performance) because of it so not making that mistake again.

So hopefully there's another 5 years of worry-free use, and I should be able to get roughly £250 back of the £525 I spent, selling my 3770k, 2500k, DDR3 and z77 motherboard.

I will let you know how the build goes and if I manage to keep it silent... I also bought a Noctua fan controller which they (Noctua) say will work with the 6x PWM fan hub in my Corsair 275Q. Plan is to drill through the side of the case so I can stick it on the side (rear for me) for easy access. Not only does this enable me to switch between normal and manual but I believe lets me run them at just 100rpm if required. Given that I have 6 in the system (3 intake, one exhaust, 2 cpu) this should perform well and be quiet!

I got it all done a few weeks ago... don't need to undervolt or underclock it. Running D14 with no fans. All I got running fan wise is a single 12x25 exhaust fan. System works great.

Messed up with the ram it turns out e-die is 5% worse than b-die performance wise so I could have had 2x16gb @ 3600 CL16 instead of the 2x8GB @ 3733 CL15 my kit does, for the same price. The performance increase is minimal on Ryzen 3000.

I tried to dual boot win10/linux by putting win10 on the nvme and linux on an SSD but every time win10 updated (literally every day) it overwrote the linux boot system on the other drive so linux never worked. So I binned windows completely. This limits me only slighty; some games don't work, even with Proton, but it's a small price to pay.

So now my system is silent AND quick. I upgraded to NVME boot drive too - mp510.

Now literally all I can hear is the whine my monitor makes on white webpages, which isn't fixed by the brightness hack :/

Looking for a new monitor now which seems a hard decision because it seems ALL OF THEM have bright spots :/

Cool. Guess you didn't need the fan controller.

In the end, no. Still have it and not used it. In the summer heatwave I wired up a noctua exhaust fan but other than that never needed a fan at all.

It's a shame nvidia don't make passive graphics cards anymore, that 1050ti was the last they ever did.
