Specification

Processor: Intel Pentium G4400 (Skylake)
Chipset: Intel H110 Chipset (Asus H110M-D D3)
Memory: 2 x 4 GB DDR3L 1,35 V PC12800 1600 MHz 11-11-11-28 (Team Elite TPD3L4GM1600HC11BK)
Power Supply: Fortron Source Power FSP-300 60-HCC
Operating System: Ubuntu 14.04 (Live CD)

Things to NOTE:

1) I don't know how ACCURATE is this WANF watt/electricity usage monitor used in this test, but using some Philips CCFL lamps the deviation (lower) from the written watt rating on the lamps are:
- less than 1 watt on sub 10-watt rated lamps
- less than 1,5 watt on 11 to 18-watt rated lamps, and
- less than 2,5 watt on 20-watt or more rated lamps
2) Even tough didn't help much reducing the power consumption (less than 1 watt) integrated sound, network, and legacy ports (serial and parallel port) were DISABLED.
3) No UNDERCLOCKING/UNDERVOLTING involved.
4) The external Asus DVD-RW drive needed to boot Ubuntu is DISCONNECTED.
5) The transceiver for Logitech keyboard and mouse is DISCONNECTED.

I think this is a good result, at least compared to not too long ago when around 20 Watt idle was considered a marketable "green" intel mobo.

Intel may have squeezed a few more milliwatts out of its new lineup of CPUs, but I guess most of the power savings come from the motherboard; I wonder how much can be attributed to the H110.

Seems like a normal behavior. I used to do a build on sandy bridge with i3 2100T and got around 13-14W idle on an intel mobo, but on a headless setup.

I think you can reach close to 12W if you disconnect everything. Lower than that you will need to into Atoms.

How you tried using the Intel Powertop utility? Well worth looking at for analysing system power consumption on Linux and it even makes suggestions on optimisation.

I use an APC UPC to measure. Here is what i got form an idle headless build: 8.4W - 10.5W

g3258 (box cooler)
h81 - GA-H81M-DS2
1 4GB DDR3 dimm - 1.5V
1 sata ssd
psu: Antec EA-380D

Got similar idle values with an i3 4170 and a b85 Asrock mobo, same ssd, same ram, same psu, ~10W.

Just put together a H81 system and it idles at 16W (Kill-a-watt) connected to a gigabit network a 25" 1080P monitor with Win 10 Pro. I have about half a dozen systems built up over the last few years just trying to get a nice silent, low power system usually trading off performance to get the power savings. And to my amazement, this system (which was designed to be fast instead of quiet) actually beats them all. It's not exactly that it is the lowest power system I've ever seen, it's that it is fast while being power efficient and quiet using "normal" components. This is what worked well:

CPU: Intel 4790K (power options min AND max processor state set to 100%)
CPU Cooler: Arctic Cooling Freezer i32
MB: MSI H81I (ITX) at default settings
Memory: 2 x 4Gb Crucial Ballistix low profile DDR3L-1600
PSU: FSP Aurum S Gold 400W
Storage: 250Gb Samsung EVO 850

The only thing special I did was replace the PSU fan with an Arctic Cooling F12 Silent. And the CPU fan runs continuously at 5V instead of using the motherboard PWM control. I think the key here for the idle is the FSP power supply, in my experience FSP products always do really well at low loads (< 20% of peak capacity). And the big CPU cooler is making cooling of the CPU trivial (and quiet). I can't hear anything at all.

Anyway, I've been trying to go small all this time to get low power. With current components, maybe I should have been thinking bigger.
