Remote printing from a MAC

Post by arknet » Thu Jul 23, 2020 8:54 am

My network knowledge is limited but was wondering how easy is it to print from a MAC to my home printer. I have a printer that I have already added to my local network and is configured as a network printer. Accessing it when away from the home would be handy. Any tips would be welcome

I think, that you need basically is a computer switch on at the time you want to print.

What is doing that computer?
  • That computer will be connected to the same Local Network as your printer.
  • But also connected to the Internet.

Printer <---> Local network <---> Computer <---> Internet <---> Device that wants to print

That computer will need software that listens for the request, and transform it into a Printer order. For that, you can use Google Cloud Printer:

And for the computer, you can use something pretty cheap, like a Raspberry Pi: https://youbil.com/best-price-for/raspberry%20pi

I tried setting it up like this, but there were problems. I may have configured something wrong, but the printer periodically refused to print even though it was turned on and the cartridges were full of ink.
