Thanks for this! I can now finally go completely (semi-)passive!

There were 6 remaining before I ordered one earlier today...

Would it be possible to add a small comment on how good the retailer is? For example overclocker.co.uk is terrible and pretty much everyone would agree. But overclock.co.uk is an amazing site. It would be nice to be able to go through the list and know which sites are decent and worth buying from.

I'm thinking of getting stuff from techheads.co.uk, I've searched and found some good comments about them but that was from a while ago, how good are they atm?

Supplier of motherboard USB/firewire and fan connectors

Had a bit of a 'mare trying to find someone who could supply a small quantity of 2.54mm DIL housings and crimps to fit internal USB/firewire headers. Had the usual problems with RSWWW and Maplin - RS cost a fortune and want you to buy a truckload whereas Maplin just doesn't stock them.

After three hours searching I finally found these guys: http://www.toby.co.uk ... I placed an order on Monday and it arrived Saturday morning. Not the quickest, but absolutely no hassle for such a hard-to-find item. They also stock lots of other useful bits and pieces including fan connector housings and crimps, but no fancy colours for all you UV freaks out there (I know the spcr forums are full of them! ).

Their catalogue is a little hard to decipher, so here are the links for the USB/fan connectors:

10-pin USB Connector Housing (you want 1900-H10):
http://www.toby.co.uk/content/catalogue ... 1900%2DHxx
Crimps for the above (ignore the bit about them only mating with 1800 housings - they fit both 1800 and 1900):
http://www.toby.co.uk/content/catalogue ... s=1800%2DT

Fan Connector Housings (AM254-03H is 3 pin, AM254-04H is 4 pin):
http://www.toby.co.uk/content/catalogue ... M254%2DxxH
Crimps for the above:
http://www.toby.co.uk/content/catalogue ... AM254T%2DL

The crimps are the most expensive items, plus there's a minimum order quantity on those (100). The USB housings are side-by-side stackable, so you can glue them together to make a 20-pin front panel connector a-la Asus' Q-connect. Or you could just order a 20-pin housing 1900-H20.

Hope that helps any other frustrated cable-modders out there!

Anyone have any experience with http://www.bowood-electronics.co.uk or http://www.rapidonline.com?

The aforementioned Bowood Electronics and Rapid Online are both fine. Bowood especially so. Within 5 minutes of placing my order I got an email confirming my stuff would be dispatched by lunch time and it arrived the next morning. Not bad considering the postage was only £1.20 for about £40 worth of stuff. They are really cheap for heatshrink tubing, although be warned you do get what you pay for - it's shiny stuff that can split if overheated - but if you're careful it's absolutely fine for everyday use.

I also noticed recently that, despite their continuing slide towards being little more than a mobile disco supply shop, Maplin currently sell 8 silicon fan mounts (for open-corner fans) for £3 - quite a saving on some online prices if you have a local branch.

Just a quick heads up, overclockers are now selling 1TB WD GP drives for £77.54 after tax, making it the cheapest 1TB drive around right now.
I suppose now the WD10EADS is out (3 platters instead of 4) they've dropped the price of the WD10EACS. In fact, its only £3 more than newegg sells them for in the states, which is nice when we're used to paying 20-40% premiums..
Other sites havent dropped their pricing yet it seems, most are still at £85+ for the EACS version.
I feel a few early xmas presents for myself might be in order!

One of the best places is Micro Direct in Manchester, UK. http://www.microdirect.co.uk/They are solid on prices and the service is awesome. We've used them for 6 years with no problems and can highly recommend them.

Anyone know if this sticky is still updated, The OP Bat hasn't logged on since 2010
A lot of the vendors listed seem to have gone the way of the Dodo
Is it still worth posting about what vendors are available in the UK?

I would guess so, as in, I got notification about this thread and looked, you had looked and posted,...

I also know that I have used this thread in the last year or so, (even though you have to sort the wheat from the chaff) I would guess other members do/would... and maybe non members do too?

If any non-members use this thread could you let us know...

Not convinced this has too much relevance anymore. Nowadays it's easier to find silent products in mainstream e-tailers and then it comes down to price and service. For price Google Prouct search is much better than any price comparison site and for service, people will know more about those that are or aren't good from other sources. If you really do have a nightmare experience then posting a new topic in the vendors section to say that they're useless will do on it's own.

surprised no one's mentioned the obvious - http://www.amazon.co.uk
Use them in conjunction with http://www.camelcamelcamel.com to notify you of price drops, and you should come out ahead of everyone else as long as you can afford to possibly wait a few days.

I'd like to support the independent shops but when a cpu & mobo come out £40 cheaper than the competition, it's hard to argue.

On another note, is there anyone like http://avadirect.com/ in the uk?
They seem to offer custom built pc's with a decent selection of parts at decent prices.

Scan have their custom built 3XS Systems that allow a degree of configuration, and include DAW and video-editing machines.

Can I just not find decent offers or do most acceptable fans cost about £10 shipped nowadays?

P&P on a fan alone is going to be quite a chunk of that £10. Ebuyer it would be £2.99 on it's own. I really would find something else to buy at the same time if you're going to buy on the Internet and spread the delivery charge.

I know. The postage charges are a little outrageous. For some companies they just scale linearly with the items. Well, gotta wait until some slipstreams pop up on ebay for a reasonable price. Alas, the classified section is a little dead here.
