Decoupling the PSU fan

Post by Ana » Mon Mar 15, 2004 7:55 am

Has anyone done this? I just tore open my Sonata stock PSU and replaced
the screws with the four extra silicone grommets provided with the case.
Three of them were easy to pull in place with a pair of pliers, naturally I had
to pull them inwards, because the case encloses the screws (grommets,
in this case) so that there is no excess room for the tips. The fourth one is
very inaccessible without removing the power switch and voltage selector (?),
so I just cut the "fins" on the tip that holds the thing in place. It actually
works better that way: It pushes the fan inwards so that in does not rest on
the PSU cover.

I just came to thinking about temperature. This may be silly, but do the
grommets handle the temperatures the PSU generates? Has anyone done this
mod, any experiences?

The temps in the PSU should be nowhere nere to melt the grommets. If it gets that hot, the PSU is already FUBAR.

Ana,

Did the mod improve noise? That stock sonata PSU is way too loud. It'd be nice to have some easy way of quieting it down

Not exactly, but I decoupled the entire PSU :)
I have also modded it by replacing the fan too so it was already pretty quiet.

Decoupling just the fan is a good idea, but it does mean you have to open the PSU cover voiding any warranty. So for those people wanting to retain the warranty decoupling the whole PSU is the way to go. Also this might not work with all units depending on how the components are laid out. Some PSUs are very cramped.

I've done this to at least four PSUs, using two kinds of fan mounts:

Revoltec rubber fan mounts

and

EAR fan mounts

In each case I have been able to cut down the vibration conduction from fan to the PSU casing and thus, the related noise.

I have not seen any ill effects yet.
