Antec TruePower 430W PSU Heat Issues

Post by oceanclub » Tue Sep 07, 2004 9:36 am

I recently upgraded from a Nexus NX-300 300w PSU to an
Antec TruePower 430W PSU. I assumed that as the Antec has
a dual fan configuration, with one inside the case, that this
would help with overheating. However, I've since seen a CPU
temperate _increase_ of 10c (from around 50c to 60c). My
PC is now spontaneously rebooting, and I'm assuming it could be
a heat problem.

Should this upgrade cause such an increase in temperature?
I notice that the PSU (no real instructions provided) comes with a
3-prong connector, similar to the type used to connect a CPU cooler to the
motherboard. Is there a socket somewhere I should attach this connector to? (My motherboard is an Asus A7A266). Is this perhaps the current problem (may this regulates the internal fan speed),

Any help/thoughts appreciated,

P.

I would have to agree with you that the reboots are probably related.

The "upgrade" added a fan controller to your system (assuming you used the fan only connector) which would drop your fan speeds and CFM.

The three prong connector (with only one wire) is for monitoring of the PSU fan speed only and shouldnt affect RPM.

Sounds to me that the lower fan speeds and probably some turbulence around the CPU from adding the fan on the bottom of the PSU are you culprits.

It would seem that your case could use some bezel mods etc... to increase flow through your case, so that you dont have to run the fans at full blast to keep things cool ( way too noisy).

1) What case are you using?
2) How many fans? What voltage?
3) Any other changes besides PSU swap?

I have the same PSU and I think that Pigpen is correct. I have modded my PSU with new quiter fans and my temps are still about the same as they were with my prior PSU. If your case has restricted air flow and you used the fan only connector on your case fan(s) this could result in significantly reduced air flow. If you open up your case to allow more air flow then the slower case fan(s) will be able to move enough air to keep things cool.
