Zalman 400 or Seasonic Tornado for Airflow 'Challenged' Case

Post by killerfish » Mon Oct 11, 2004 4:41 am

Hello,

I have a case that doesn't exactly breath well! :) Net, temps are probably higher than most. Also, I need a 400W PSU. I know the Seasonic got a better review than Zalman, but since my temps will be higher, will that big fan be ramped up most of the time? Therefore, eliminating it's silent edge? Net, some PSUs may not be the quietest at Idle, but may be quieter than others under load with higher temps...

Bottom line: I need a quiet PSU that works best in a higer temp case. Reco?

Thanks!
KF

One reason for choosing the ZM400B-APS is that it's easy to duct. Apart from that, I can't help you...

If the Tornado has a 120mm fan, I'd go for it. Otherwise, my Zalman is audible.... probably quieter than most PS's, but not silent.
Definetely recommend ducting it.

My Zalman is ducted in a way (Lian Li PC-V series so direct bottom intake) and it is still the noisiest component in my rig... but 6 months ago I thought is was inaudible, so it all depends on your total setup. It can stand high temps without losing efficiency, so a fan swap will probably help things.

If you have an airflow-challenged case I'd definately go for a 120mm fan, since it helps case airflow more that a single 80mm model IMO. But just out of curiosity: what case are we talking about?

Also if you are lacking airflow you could get an 80-120mm fan adaptor (or something like it) for your exhaust, plus make sure you cut away any restrictive grills.
