Nexus 4090

Hi

I have an Antec 3700BQE with the preinstalled 350W Smartpower, and am looking for something a bit quieter.

I have a budget of around £50-£60 for a replacement power supply, and saw the Nexus 4090 for £55.

This has not been reviewed on SPCR, so I was wondering if anybody had any good reliable links for reviews of this power supply, or if anybody has experience of it first hand?

Are there any other power supplies in this price range that I could consider? I am looking for something in the 400W range, since I think my Antec 350 may be a bit on the low side for the AMD 64 CPU. My specs are below:

AMD 64 3000+
1GB DDR400
Pioneer DV108
Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250Gb SATA
MSI Geforce 4 Ti4200
Sound Blaster Live
3700BQE with 120mm case fan

Thanks
Jooppy

Have had 4090 for a couple of months. Extremely happy with it :D I run a reasonably thirsty system (P4/2.66, 4 x IDE drives, 2 x CDRW, ATI 9800Pro) and find it completely stable and a very low noise PSU. Beat the previous Nexus 3000 I had (also decent PSU but donated to other system).

cheers, martin

Search the forums for "4090" and you will find a lot of possitive comments.

Thanks, will do a search.

Any other power supplies that people can recommend, or is the Nexus the best for the money?

Thanks

The Seasonic Super Tornado (120mm fan) & Super Silencer are good, but will set you back rather more - ~£80-85 for a 400W Super Tornado.

When you say 'beat' you mean that its even quieter than the 300w Nexus?

The Nexus 3000 is rated at 18.6db and the NX-4090 at 16.2db in idle mode. http://www.nexustek.nl/hq/

I have seen that before but usually i tend to take sound readings with a pinch of salt.
Nexus seem to be one of the few companies that give a 'real' sound reading rather than just using words like 'silent' and '26db' readings. *cough*Coolermaster*cough*
When its closer to 40db and more like a jet engine!

Btw 8300ati i take it you mean 300w not 3000w

Slight buzz

I just bought a 4090, unfortunately it gives off a slight electrical buzz which is not loud but definately both more irritating and louder than the 120mm fan. :(

I read somewhere else in the forum that the buzz could be unit dependant? Did I just get unlucky or is this a common problem? What gets me worried is that if it starts of with this low electrical hum, it will grow loud over time and really cause a problem.

Tibors its ok, i wasn't confused. It's Nexus naming that is confusing.
NX-3000 = 300w
NX-3500 = 350w
NX-4000 = 400w
NX-4090 = 400w? what’s the 90 for?

Would it not be better to call it NX-4012, to imply a 12cm fan?
Not that it really matters of course, a names just a name.
I'm just being picky!

I don't have any irritating buzz from where I sit(close) with the NX-4090. I bought it at end of August from recent stock. I understand what you mean about irritating though. I had a "Silen"X fan that was reasonably quiet except for this buzz. It was'nt loud at all but still a constant attack on my eardrum, and enough to make me remove it and put in a Nexus fan.

I understand that the Nxus-4090 is indeed very quiet in idle or in moderate loads.
But what about heavy loads, is it still very quiet or does the noise increase terribly?

I've never experienced the fan to ramp up and the air coming out is mostly cool, not even warm but this will also depend on the case ventillation. Also I believe this to be the general view on this power supply from reading other peoples experiences .

Ok, that's sounds pretty good to me. :)

I still haven't decided if this is the one for me, or if I should go for a Tagan 480. It's a shame there are so few reviews on the Nexus out there...at least that I could find.

I installed my 4090 yesterday and I got the buzz, too. Very annoying.

I planned to use it as the only case fan, but unfortunately it speeds up to airport noise very quickly. I guess the load of 2.4GHc PIV C @ 1.5v, 9800 PRO, a couple of HDDs and 1.5 Gigs of ram is too much for it to run silently.

I'll replace my 4090 tonight with my old ducted HEC 450W and 120mm Nexus fan (in the duct).
