PCI-E?

Post by Pendu » Thu May 26, 2005 7:42 am

If you have a PCI-E mobo but have an old psu which you bought before PCI-E was out will you still be able to use the PCI-E on the mobo. I ask this because i have seen on some sites that some psu's have pci-e power connectors and i'm wondering if you can only use pci-e if the psu has a pci-e power connector.

Most PCI-e video cards do not require any power straight from the PSU. Even if they did (only the most powerful cards) you can get a Molex power converter plug (usually comes with the video card), but you will need lots of power in your PSU for this. For Nvidia cards, the 6600GT and below do not require any additional power other than what they get from the slot.

Another issue is whether the MB has a 24 or 20 pin connector for the PSU connector. Most (but not all PCI-e) boards have a 24 pin connector, so it is best to use a PSU with the same kind of plug.
