Antec Phantom 350 fanless - with no fans

Post by mo786 » Fri Oct 14, 2005 6:47 pm

Antec Sonata2 Case - what will happen if I run the PSU with no fans in the case at all? I have a modified Zalman with a Nexus (but its srunning so slow it makes no different to airflow in the case IMO

Current CPU temp is avg 41degrees

I have
1 HDD
2 DVD Drives
1 Graphics Card
1 TV card
1 ADSL Modem (PCI)
1 Normal Modeom (which never gets used mind)

I DO leave my PC on for long periods (i.e 12 hours at a time)

Which graphics card and processor? I think you should have at least one slow-moving exhaust fan just to keep the air moving through the case.

Once, I accidentally left the Molex to my fan controller unplugged. At idle, overnight, A) the thermal protection kicked in on the CPU and B) the case was burning to the touch and C) I had to unplug the cable to the wall socket and wait several hours for the computer to cool off enough so it could boot up.

No, you can't run a modern computer safely without fans.

As an owner of a Phantom 350 i can say it does need some airflow, not much though. A 120mm fan in the back at 400-500rpm is enough. Its fine as long as it feels only warm and not burning hot.

Varm on the back-side, or warm on the top/bottom? (inside the case). I have mine cooled by a nexus 5v 120mm, seems to be reasonably cool, lukevarm to the touch i would guess (thats about the same temprature as the body, maybe a bit more).

When the computer was watercooled witht he reserator and the PSU was in a normal case witht the exhaust fan under it, it felt just barely warm to the touch on all sides. I have cold hands, wich makes my finger-probe a bit more sensitive

Now, sitting in the P180 lower chamber, with one hdd in the lower bay, it feels warmer. not hot but definately warmer than before. I have no clue why this is the case, its the same system as before and the psu gets more or less cool air. The air in the P180 should be cooler than in the previous case so i would think the situation would be the opposite, but apparently not. Oh and this is with a 120mm nexus at about 7V in the lower chamber, and all the small holes in the wall in wich the fan mounts to sealed so there should be no air recirculating.

If i stop the fan in the lower chamber it gets hot, i can still keep my hand on it and it doesnt burn but it gets noticeably warmer.

eidt: come to think of it in the previous setup the exhaust fan was actually pulling air in thru the phantom and cooling it that way. So i could try changing the direction of th fan in the lower chamber, but then i would have to make a filter in the rear of the case, i just recently discovere that the filters in the P180 are indeed collectng dust  I dont want my PSU to get all clogged up with dust inside  im tired, and theres jus a few hours until the Formula1 race starts, so i think i should get some sleep...

will it be OK with a Nexus 120mm fan running at say 500rpm at the back of the case under the PSU?

With the components you have, it definately should be plenty :) In my second computer i have a 9250 SE wich is passive stock, and it puts out almost no heat at least at idle :) I doubt your tv card and modems put out that much heat.
