PSU 12V line at 13.184v

Post by cloneman » Thu Feb 16, 2006 8:15 pm

According asus probe, my cheapo psu (25$) is giving 13.184 volts on the 12 V line. No abnormal symptoms can be detected so far (its been at least a month). Should I consider replacing it? This is a 900mhz system, (not worth investing too much in).

I'm also going to check with a multimeter in case asus proble is lying.

yeah definately check with a multimeter :)
If its actually @ 13V, thats too high, will shorten the life of the computer.

ATX specification allows for +/- 5% on the 12V line, so that is out of specification. Could damage your motherboard, but on the other hand, it might be okay - it's hard to tell. To be safe, you should probably replace your PSU.

Assuming using a multimeter finds your voltage above 13V, I would only replace the PSU if the system had any critical functions (ie does data storage work). If its just another internet box and old school gaming machine, then I wouldn't bother, I imagine if your old 900MHz does die, you'll probably have another machine thats gotten old enough to take its place.
