PSU needed (Current one is driving me up the wall!)

Post by Zain » Sun Apr 16, 2006 3:50 pm

Basically i've got a modded PC it came with a cheap psu (Win Power 460w) the thing is sitting here ROARING at me. I can stand it anymore drastic action needed!

So recently i started looking at some psu's i want a highly efficient psu with a fully mesh design (meshy as possible) and dead silent.

No special requirements such as PCI-E needed. Im gonna run this baby off a AGP card. Oh and sata would be nice but I could always just get a Molex to Sata converter.

I was looking at a few psu's:
Akasa 460w --------------------supposedly 18db
Hiper Type R 480w

All comments welcome, thanks in advanced.

Read through the PSU reviews and the recommendations section on this site. There are lots of good PSUs there. Also, you may not need 460w, the actual power requirements are discussed in the recommended psus article. As long as you can supply enough current on the 12v rail you should be fine, really.

Your AGP board probably lacks the staggered startup that seems to be engineered into a lot of the PC-EI/SLI boards so the Antec Neo HE will probably work just fine for you. I'd recommend trying one. They are the quietest unmodded, actively-cooled PSUs I've ever heard.

What is this staggered startup thing? Is it something like the graphics card gets powered up after the rest of the system to reduce the amount of current needed at once?
