New Rig - What psu?

Hi all,

In the next month i shall have the kit below but im miffed on what PSU to get for it! ive been told to get a Pc power and cooling psu, but that will mean modifying the case and adding more fans ( which isn’t a prob) and the PSU is about £290 inc p&p , and is also 9.1 inches long.

I want to stick with 1 PSU,

I’ve been looking at the Enermax 620W, but it has quit a lot of bad reviews and I don’t know how good modular PSU’s are.

Sseasonic 600w Not sure about but almost everyone has one so it must be good.!

Just looked ad the Antec Phantom but it only has 1 pcie connector, but looks good.

I want the PSU to handle the system below and to take some upgrades in the future and some overclocking without any problem what so ever.

The spec shall be.

Hmm not much of a diffrence , the enermax 620w makes some noise over 150w as the fan kicks in. But thats about it :E Hmmm the choices

I'd suggest an antec neo HE 500w, its quiet and can run crossfire properly (unlike dual 12V rail psu's - assuming they actually are).

Also i'd suggest a different motherboard, the asus a8r32-mvp would do much better since its a newer RD580 board. DFI rdx200 doesn't even do sata2/ncq

If you don't have any noise requirements (though you probably do), I'd recommend the Zippy or Supermicro PSUs described in the link in my sig.

EDIT: A Fortron FX600-GLN should be able to handle it.

I recommend the Seasonic S12 as well. But if you can't decide then just buy the less expensive one.

Your system will be drawing over 150w.

I have had very good luck with my Seasonics, an S12-380 and an S12-330 which was retrofitted onto an older machine. Both machines are quiet (but audible), however, the loudest component is not the PSU.

Money might force you into a different choice, but I am not aware of anyone on this board who has purchased a Seasonic and regretted the purchase. A small percentage of the people on this board focus on voltage regulation and disregard sound, but that's a different ballgame.

I already have the DFI motherboard, so i wont be changing it

(nothing a bios update cant fix) Ok thanks guys , ill probs get the seasonic as its been reccomended by alot of people.

Hi, I agree with everyone else that Seasonic S12 or Antec NEO HE would both be fine choices.
With a system as high end as yours you need to check the individual lines are up to the job, especially the 12v lines.
I think the ATI cards are 100~110w each and draw off the 12v line as does the CPU, X2 4800 is ~ 70w. 10w is ample for each HDD and 20w enough to cover motherboard, memory, fans etc.
Your system would need ~9A from each 12V line for the graphics cards. This leaves 9A on each line (with S12 600) for everything else. The CPU, at stock, is ~6A, so there's some room for over-clocking and 9A on the other line is ample for HDDs, ODDs etc, etc. S12 range spec sheet You talked about £s so I guess your in the UK. S12 available at KoolnQuiet and (currently OoS) Ebuyer. www.xcase.co.uk also used to do them including cheaper OEM versions if you bought a case at same time, they also do Coolermaster cases.
The NEO 550 has three 18A 12V rails (max 500w across them) that, in my opinion, makes it more suitable for your PC than the S12. With the 3 separate lines you can have one for CPU and one each for the graphics cards so you’re not pushing a line close to the limit like you would with the S12 and makes splitting up the power requirements easier. It also gives you more room to play with for over-clocking. It’s also available, amongst many place, from Ebuyer in such an expensive setup that it’s £20 cheaper maybe insignificant!
Extrapolating from SPCRs reviews of the S12 600 and the NEO 430 I conclude the NEO maybe quieter at idle, although I suspect a beast like you’ve outlined to idle at ~ 100w but the Seasonic maybe quieter under full load (gaming). The Seasonic may also move more air for better case cooling, not that your chosen case looks like it needs it.

Nice guideline there, a hard choice really do I go with the Neo or S12 at the moment I’m going to choose the S12 as it just seems more robust and as you said better performance at airflow etc. id doubt I shall need the airflow as you stated but id rather have it than having the psu run at high temps.
