Going fanless?

Post by dhutch » Sat Nov 18, 2006 2:00 pm

Just a quick straw-poll judgement, how workable are the current fanless psu units?
- They dont seam to be progressing as fast as i though they would.
- Seams fairly easy to me, stick a big heatsink assembly out the back of the psu unit, where tha fan would usally be, and bobs-you-uncal right?

Ive some industial PSU units, which kick 40amps (20volt), have tighter tollerences than the computer psu manufators release, and just have a big bank of fins on the back.
- Switched mode PSUs can be around 80% efficient, so around the 150watt output, thats only 25watts of heat to loose, its not escessive!

why not go powerbrick/pico-psu then? if the psu is already halfway outside the case. would make cases much smaller at that.

i wanna see developments in low price 250w external power bricks and some reductions on the pico.

None of the rigs in your sig should tax a quality 300W fanless psu. (eg silverstone st30nf)
