Need some help with a ps...
I'm putting together a second computer and I'm trying to quiet my system. Its currently too noisy for my taste.
I'm stuck on the power supply. I'm looking for something quieter than the Antec True power series(which I have now), which brings to mind the Nexus and the Zalmon ps. I'm looking for 350-400w as I will likely add a Radeon 9800 or 9700 to the system. Who actually sells these larger and more poweful powersupplies? I can't find anyone selling Seasonics at a reasonable price. I was considering also the Seasonic 350w. I did read the 300w sticky post, but I'd like to have the comfort level of having roughly 350 available as more and more hardware is going to suck power. Which also brings me to this question.. if I'm going to be running multiple drives (non Seagate Barracuda IV, V class), is it even worth getting a quieter power supply?

I'm new here, but this is as close to your specifications as I have found thus far: the Nexus 400w featured here
or the SilenX 350w or Silenx 400w, both of which are currently unavailable until sometime in early April.

www.newegg.com sells seasonic power supplies.
They did for about 3 weeks, but they are now all sold out and no longer list the supplies bigger than 300wGamingGod wrote:www.newegg.com sells seasonic power supplies.

So April 7 is the official release date for the SilenX team? I thought that it was, but wasn't completely sure. Seems that I have read that in another post in this forum.Brumbar wrote:I'm going for the SilenX 400watt or 550watt (if they are going to make that one) myself. The website says 300watts to 550watts, so I hope they have the 550 by April 7th. The extra power would be nice because the SilenX looks like a PSU I'll be keeping for awhile.
I have a truepower now, and I am finding it a bit too loud as well. (and am also afraid to mod it (see my thread). I also had a Zalman, be carefull with what you buy with your radeon 9700. My Zalman made a high pitched noise with my 9700. It has happened to others. I threw it back in today just to see how loud it was in general against the Truepower, and I didn't find it too be much different at all. (in overall loudness) From what I have read the seasonic is at about the same or very similar sound level as the Zalman. So you might either want to consider modding you turepower or go higher up in the Nexus.
Will the 300w nexus be enough to drive a couple of hard drives and a 9700? It is interesting to see that a lot of the 300+ watt psu's are not upping the amps on the 12 channel, if at all. Hmm.... I'm leaning towards the Nexus 3000.dvdvideo wrote:I have a truepower now, and I am finding it a bit too loud as well. (and am also afraid to mod it (see my thread). Unless you are doing some serious overclocking and have like 6 case fans, from what I have read at least a true 300watt power supply is enough. I had no problem power wise (at least during the short time I used it) with the Zalman (just that whine).
I was running 1 case fan, 1 60 Gig 7200 hard drive, dvd-rom, cd-rom, radeon 9700 pro, and an overclocked 2100+ thunderbird.

Interesting... the plan is to overclock somewhat with the system (although if I need it I can resort back to the true power 380). It will be a p4 2.4 (hopefully 3.0-3.3 oc on air), 3 case fans, 2 scsi drives, and 1 optical drive. A 9700/9800 is likely to be added at some point.dvdvideo wrote:Unless you are doing some serious overclocking and have like 6 case fans, from what I have read at least a true 300watt power supply is enough. Actually the True Power 380 is a slightly different model from the True 380S PSU sold with the Sonata.
Quoted from MikeC's review of the True 380S

http://www.silentpcreview.com/modules.p ... =61&page=1"The True 380S in this case is not the same as the TruePower 380 in that it has only one 80mm fan. The second 92mm fan common to the rest of the TruePower line has been omitted, and the intake air vents on the inside of the PSU have been doubled in area. "
