Seasonic S12-430 vs MSI 7600GT

Post by TomMe » Mon Mar 05, 2007 9:08 am

Hi. 8 months ago I assembled my current machine (in sig) and have had a problem with it since. Sometimes (and this is rare) I get to see vertical bars when POSTing the piece of..metal. Here are some pictures:

All I have to do to clear this issue is shut down and start up again:

A reset doesn't help, the machine needs to power down (but PSU can stay in standby or whatever it is called).

So why am I posting this in the PSU section? I've sent the card back to MSI for repair several months ago, when I got it back the problem occured again after two months. I've contacted MSI again and their advice this time is to use a PSU that boots faster. What the...?

So, could this be some sort of minor incompatibility between the S12-430 and the MSI 7600GT?

Anyone else have some advice, because I've ran out.. This problem becoming a bit tiresome and I'm starting to think about buying another machine.

(for further reading, my topic in the MSI forum: http://forum.msi.com.tw/index.php?topic ... #msg724035)

Thanks.

I read through the stuff you posted in the MSI forums, SPCR level knowlege still isnt present everywhere.

Its not a PSU power issue, and its ot an overheatig issue.

I would aggree that it is possible that it is a PSU/Graphics card issue, but I think that this is unlikely, and is only possible to test by replacing the PSU, or by using the graphics card i a different PC. It is also possible that it is your RAM, but as this only happens at startup this is unlikely, so were back to the Graphics card or mobo.

As for the nvdisp error that is usually a straight forward graphics card fault and as the nvdisp file has not been run yet during the BIOS phase you ca rule out a driver/windows/any software issue.

Does your graphics card have an external power connector, if so is it connected by a native 6-pin power cable or via 2-molex cables to a six pin pci-e power connector.??? As far as I can remember those graphics card work just fine in 2D mode without an external power connector, you will just get a error message in windows, you could try that as well to rule out the external power connector causing the problem.

Thanks for reading everything andyb.

I currently have no means of testing this card in another machine. I've also used this PSU in an older XP2000+ system for 3 weeks before I got this one, without any problems. But perhaps 3 weeks isn't long enough to catch a problem.

I've also used a cheap AOpen GF FX5200 PCI in my current machine, and I did have some problems with it but I don't think they are related. Sometimes my screen just went blank in Windows/games and after that my machine sometimes rebooted. I could almost replicate that problem by putting the card in the lowest PCI slot and installing ForceWare. Never any vertical bars though. And never any blank screens with the GF 7600GT. Related?

I've run Memtest86+ several times on this machine at DDR voltages of 2.0V-2.10V without any problem there, only at lower voltages..which is probably normal.

As for the motherboard, I've tried 2 of the same model, the problem occurs with both. Last time I had flashed to the latest BIOS the previous day. I also booted into Windows again, this time the system just halted and the screen went blank instead of an nvdisp4 error. I had that before though.

The card doesn't require any external or alternate internal supply of power. Here are some nice pictures of the card to support this:

Next I'm going to ask MSI if they have a list of compatible PSUs. I was planning to buy a new one, just because I threw away one recently. I really like this S12 series though, VERY quiet. Maybe I'll look at those M12s and give one of those a try.

I wonder how much more money I have to pump into this machine to get it to work properly. Pfff, next time I'm buying a Packard Bell. :P
