Intel ATX12V 1.3 coming

Many of you know that Intel's PSU design guides, which are available at http://www.formfactors.org/developer/powersupply.htm, pretty much dictate what manufacturers do. Intel's current ATX/ATX12V design guide version is 1.2; well, a little birdie told me that version 1.3 is about to be released.

Among other things, it calls for for more beefed up current delivery in the 12V line. Some of you may be aware that the almost universal 15A max rating for a 12V line in a 300W PSU is in fact the result of Intel's ATX/ATX12V V1.2 doc that says this is their recommended current capacity for that line. The new spec will call for higher current.

Why? Because Intel's coming CPUs will be more current-hungry than ever. Not good news for silent enthusiasts or environmentalists.

Look for the official announment soon. It will be posted on the front page news.

That really bites. The war between AMD and Intel have caused them to think about speed only, and not effeciency. This makes PC's louder for us consumers :( Soon were all going to need 10 lb heat sinks. We'll need to move our PC's around with hand truck lift dollies or on casters.

On the other hand, the good news is, this web site popularity will continue to grow :)
Time to start looking into cases with room for 172mm fans!

I've been keeping my eye on the past:

PIII-S 1.4Ghz. Running undervolted. Probably draws 21-22W at idle, 28 at full load. No hardcore cooling or PSU needed. Runs cool and quiet. Plenty powerful for 99% of what I need. I fire up my 3Ghz P4 box for the other 1% of the time.

How many people really need a 3+ Ghz CPU? I can barely notice any difference in speed between my PIII-S 1.4 with 512MB of PC133 RAM and my P4 3.0Ghz with 1024MB of DDR400 RAM in normal daily usage. Even something like Photoshop runs barely slower on my PIII box as opposed to my P4 box. The only thing that really seems to tax my PIII setup is the newer games.
