Corsair HX520 or HX620?

Post by mtheuma » Fri Apr 27, 2007 9:01 am

My knowledge of power needs is non-existent , so I could use some help. Based on the following system specs, will the HX520 be enough, or would I be better of getting the HX620?

AMD Athlon X2 4600+
ASUS A8N-SLI Premium
2GB Crucial Ballistix RAM (4x 512MB @ 2.8v)
nVidia GeForce 8800GTX

Creative X-FI Extreme Gamer - PCI
Linksys Wi-Fi Card - PCI
Hauppauge WinTV-NOVA-T 500: Dual Digital TV tuner - PCI

2x SATA hard drives
2x IDE DVD writers

6x USB devices
3 or 4 case fans

Thanks for your help.

HX520 should still have over 150W of headroom for future expansion. :)

mtheuma:

I plugged all of the numbers into this PSU calculator and got the following result:

Typical max sustained total power consumption while gaming (watts): 239W
Typical 12V combined amps while gaming: 17.1A

Recommended PSU wattage for decent brand PSU: 361W
Recommended 12V combined amps for decent brand PSU: 24.7A

The HX520 will fit the bill quite nicely. Also, jolynsbass found the HX520 with a $20 MIR at Buy.com (link). If you prefer the larger sibling for whatever reason, ZipZoomFly is offering a $20 MIR of their own, bringing the final price to $123.90 (link).

Excellent, thanks guys. I'll go with the HX520.

PrivatePixel: Unfortunately I'm in England, so I can't take advantage of those offers.

Thanks again.

520 is perfect for that. the 620 was a chunk more money, I bought it, but it is kinda useless. even for a gtx setup.
