Antec Neo 550 louder than 430 version?

Antec Neo 550 louder than 430 version?

Post by tomliversidge » Wed Jul 04, 2007 3:59 am

Hi,

Does anyone know if the different versions of the Antec Neo differ in loudness? I have a 550 and it is quite audible. Would i be likely to hear an improvement (i.e. quieter!) with a different PSU? i.e. something like the Corsair HX520?

Thanks!

Asrock Conroe 865PE, Core2Duo E6400, Antec Neo 550, Scythe Ninja, P182, AcoustiPack, 2x Samsung Spinpoint 250 in Scythe QuietDrives, MAudio Audiophile, 2X UAD-1, GeForce 7600 Fanless, 2X Noctua 120mm Case Fans.

550 seems to be way too much for your system. go for a psu < 400w

I would go for a seasonic 330W or 430W. I have the 430W version, it is very quiet and gives more than enough power to my pc (8800, overclocked core2duo etc..)

yeah i agree it is too much - when i went to buy the psu, they were out of stock on the lower Neo's, so i bought the 550.

but i dont want to buy a lower spec PSU if it isn't going to make any difference noise-level wise...

oooooh, uad-1's. I was thinking of getting a couple of those, pci-e versions. The DSP on them is about 8 years old though, so I'm hoping they come up with like a uad-2 sometime this century =-O . I also had the same soundcard as you for a long time, maybe 4 years. Great product.

yeah some of the modern plugs do eat up the dsp. a uad-2 would be great! plus they run hot as hell! i have 2 of these and a fanless graphics card... all 3 next to each other generating lots of heat.

No-one has really answered the question - is the Neo 550 louder than the 430?

Antec says my TPII 550W powering slightly overclocked 7900gs sli-rig is "21,3 dB/A" and I can hear that psu thru my system even I use Tri-cool's at medium.

Don't trust manufacturer's word.

The system I just made has a Neo550...and I am rather unsatisfied with the speed/ramping of the fan. I'm making a switch to a Corsair HX520 myself since that should be quite a bit quieter.

They also find that the Seasonic 430W S12 is notably noisier than the 500W and 600W versions and also has poorer regulation. This doesn't seem to match the observations on this forum (I don't have a Seasonic PSU so I wouldn't know myself)
