Scythe to launch a line of PSUs
According to one Italian site Scythe is about to launch a line of PSUs called "ChouRiki" ( I know, strange name).
These are supose to come in 400,500,600, 850 and 1KW sizes.
Here is a bit cut 'n paste from site:
La ventola fornita in dotazione è una 120x120x25mm con controllo termico avente una variazione di rpm differente a seconda del wattaggio richiesto:
450~830rpm / 7.9~14.2dBA(400W)
450~870rpm / 7.9~14.8dBA(500W)
450~1100rpm / 7.9~18.6dBA(600W)
580~1420rpm / 10.0~24.2dBA(700W)
490~1460rpm / 8.5~24.7dBA(850W)
560~1460rpm / 9.6~24.7dBA(1000W)

830/870 rpm at 400/500 W look nice, though AFAIR not best and I wonder if it's at room temperature.
They will also launch a case called Fenris Wolf: http://www.scythe.co.jp/case/fenris-wolf.html
It's aluminium, looks rather nice, reduces HDD vibration and comes with 2 800rpm fans that look like they're Slipstreams.
I don't know Japanese and can't find it at their English site, so don't know about other features. Still could be good value (and certainly stock-quiet!).

450~830rpm / 7.9~14.2dBA(400W) is that
450RPM min - 830 RPM max on a 400W PSU? If so what is the 7.9 about?
Some google translation
OK so they are saying maximum dBA on the 400W version is 14.2. If those numbers are SPCR quality (1 meter from the PSU with a proper measuring technique) then I could get the 500W or 600W and still never hear it.The whole series is characterized by components that can withstand up to a temperature of 105°c, has a fan scythe kama-flex and is RoHS and 80plus certified.
The fan is supplied with a thermal control 120x120x25mm with a variation of different rpm depending on the wattage required:
450 to 830rpm / 7.9 to 14.2dBA (400W)
450 to 870rpm / 7.9 to 14.8dBA (500W)
450 to 1100rpm / 7.9 to 18.6dBA (600W)
580 to 1420rpm / 10.0 to 24.2dBA (700W)
490 to 1460rpm / 8.5 to 24.7dBA (850W)
560 to 1460rpm / 9.6 to 24.7dBA (1000W)

Oh and Chouriki apparently translates to Super-Powered and is pronounced with a long o sound (ChÅThe Chouriki PSU will have a different package that the Japanese version, so please stay tuned until it will be supplied.
I'll supply you some information about it in advance though, even it was not planned. The fan location depends on the version which depends on the wattage. Only the 850 and 1000W version has the fan in the middle, because the PSU is longer than the others. The fan is a Kama FLEX with S-FDB bearing

Re: Scythe to launch a line of PSUs
Well, the claim of 14dBA at 830 RPM (in an anechoic chamber) is actually quite believable. 8dBA at 450RPM is certainly theoretically possible, but it seems doubtful they would actually have the facilities to make such a measurement, as that would require both an excellent chamber and microphone. Then again, Anandtech actually visited their facilities in Fremont and was pretty impressed with their setup (no specific mention of noise testing or those facilities, though).dhanson865 wrote:If those numbers are SPCR quality (1 meter from the PSU with a proper measuring technique) then I could get the 500W or 600W and still never hear it.
Having a top fan speed of ~800RPM is the first I've ever heard of a PSU manufacturer bucking the trend of grossly overspecing the fan for their low-end PSU. Maybe it helps that Scythe is already selling a popular 800RPM fan! I guess the big question is going to be price. If the 400W can be had for $80 or less it should be a worthy contender. Not having to swap the fan is worth a $25 premium over otherwise comparable units, in my opinion.

I have to say, Fenris looks impressive. Also, I love the way they have used chrome fan grill. Case however looks that it will be quite pricey. But it looks very nice and they have really thought about ventilation and reducing case ventilation turbulence. i just don't like that the front door has mesh. It gives straight sound path to the noise.
