Antec Signature vs Enermax Modu82+

Post by Skakruk » Sun Oct 11, 2009 2:43 pm

My Corsair HX620 is driving me insane with it's damn coil whine, so I'm going to replace it. But I simply cannot make up my mind between the Enermax Modu82+ 625W and Antec Signature 650 for my HTPC build. If anyone has noticed any coil whine in either of those units, for God's sake let me know now!

Anyway, which would you choose and why?

Antec Signature without a doubt.

It's better built with superb voltage regulation and the product quality is consistent no matter which batch you buy from.

Hi, I have a rather squeally GTX260 that I’ve managed to mostly tame with super glue! It made my NeoHE whine terribly too, I’ve now replaced it with an Antec Signature 650 that has more-or-less no coil whine. The fan isn’t quite as quiet as I’d ideally like but it’s not really a problem, even at night in quiet environment so I doubt you’d have an issue with it.
The Enermax fan maybe quieter, I think I’ve seen report of people using them with gfx card that could make them squeal but they don’t so I infer that it’s OK in this regard. Not seen a direct report saying it fixed a coil whine issue though. When buying the Signature I looked at the Enermax but thread with many people reporting the fans getting loud over time put me off some. I got the Signature on special offer for £80 so similar price to the Enermax too.
Be aware the Signature is 7â€

Seasonic X-650. 80+ Gold and fanless until ~270W DC load.
Otherwise I'm very happy with my Signature 650.

This page lists the Australian distributor. Maybe you can get an ETA?

"Seasonic Patented "Hybrid Silent Fan Control" *

The reviewer noted the fan stayed off for test one, but it kicked on for test two and was that because of exhaust temperature 34-35C?

As for the voting, doesn't one really need both units to make a comparison for a realistic conclusion?

Hmmm... that Antec's fan positioning as a bit of a PITA. My silverstone HTPC case has a grille positioned for the usual 120mm fan placement (on the underside) for PSUs. This means that the PSU is almost totally isolated from the rest of the case airflow. The Antec Signature PSUs cannot make use of this grille.

Should this factor be making any difference to my choice?

Now that I've seen the review, I think I'll wait for the Seasonic X-650.
